Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Rogers.
Hi Evan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up on a lot of 80’s and 90’s rock. My dad is also in a band called White Liger, and that’s their sort of sound too. I also went to school for theatre, so it goes without saying that I love to sing and play onstage. But when the pandemic hit, the future of live performance was called into question a little bit. That’s sort of what called me to start THEFIRSTBOURNE. – I wanted to create and express myself in a more accessible way and I ended up falling in love with it. I started releasing songs, and eventually two EP’s and an album, playing local shows with some good friends and just trying to get better. I’m working on new material again and it’s seriously such a rewarding thing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Writer’s block is something I struggle with a lot. I get in my head a lot and I overthink, so sometimes I write things I end up scrapping because they just aren’t saying what I want them to. But that’s just part of the process, you’ll throw out lyrics and sounds that you liked one day and hate the next because as you grow and change, so does what inspires you.
It’s also tough finding the right audience sometimes. My work comes from a very raw, real place and a lot of the time it doesn’t quite connect the way I think it will. And then sometimes songs I don’t expect to make waves, do. The entertainment world can be unpredictable that way, but you just have to keep at it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I graduated from NKU in 2022 with a focus in acting. I love every opportunity I can get to take a role and mold it into something wholly unique. I feel my most like myself when I’m onstage and acting is a huge part of that.
I’m also barista of six years. I’ve worked at a bunch of local shops and I’ve really fallen in love with coffee. As much as I love being caffeinated though, I really enjoy being a barista because it gives me the chance to connect with my community and make a positive impact on the people around me. A cup of coffee and a smile go a long way at 7:00 in the morning!
How do you think about happiness?
Is “being an artist” too cheesy?
I have been creating in every aspect I could since I’ve been able to hold a pencil. I’ve always felt like I’m where I’m supposed to be when I’m being creative. Writing, drawing, painting, designing, singing, playing – whenever I’m making art, I’m reminded that this is why I was put on this planet.
