Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Flewelling.
Hi Tyler, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m from a small town in upstate New York called Horseheads (yes that’s the real name) and from an early age music quickly became my favorite thing. I would sit up in my room for hours listening to cassettes and CD’s on repeat.
When I was a preteen my parents got me my first drum kit and it quickly became my favorite instrument. I learned piano first, then drums and later guitar, but drums to this day are still my favorite.
I spent a lot of time in various bands in my teen years and into my time in college where I went for music business and music production.
After graduating I moved to Ithaca and worked at a recording studio there for almost 8 years.
Now I’m working out of my house producing and mixing music when I’m not working my day job.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh god, the road of music is paved with struggles, but I have to say it’s been pretty good for me. That’s partly due to the people I’ve ended up being surrounded by, but it also has to do with where I set the bar for myself. I won’t lie and say I don’t have an ego but we all do. However I decided years ago that my level of success would simply be that I’m participating in the process of creating and releasing music.
Don’t get me wrong, I try to progress and get better everyday and the thought crosses my mind whether I could be doing something more with music, but honestly if that ever happened it would all be cherries on top.
When it boils down to it, I’ll just say this: you can only control so much of the process, but with the parts you CAN control, you should do everything in your power to make those things work for you and not against yourself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently I’m a producer and drummer for an artist named Timothy. Drums have always been my sweet spot with production coming in a close second.
I’m really proud of the fact that so far in my career in music I’ve been able to work on a lot of peoples music and collectively help release over 150 songs.
I feel like something I strive for and hope that it sets me apart from other people is my ability to always be learning and never stop being curious. I know a lot of people who just seem content to know the things they know and they’re fine without learning anything new. For me, music is so attractive because there’s always something new to learn or perfect or take in a new direction.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t really view myself as a risk taker. I’ve always preferred slow and consistent growth rather than trying to take wild swings on things.
I feel like I’d rather have longevity rather than the possibility of being a shooting star where you burn bright for a little bit but then flame out after the burst. I know that’s not sexy or what a lot of people strive for in music but for me it’s what I aim for.
