Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxx Slater
Hi Maxx, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I travelled down quite a few roads that lead me to where I am today. Everything from Nursing Assistant, to Event Planner, I even had a short tenure as the manager of a warehouse that distributed textbooks across the country. A very short tenure haha. But all of those experiences led me to be the artist that I am today. I believe that my past experiences in travel and different occupations all have played a part in the artist that I am today. What started as a form of self-therapy a few years ago, has blossomed into something that I never saw coming. The opportunities that I’ve been so fortunate to have are the result of alot of hard work and soul searching, and I feel lucky that I get to share my work with the world now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been some challenges, but I count them as learning experiences really. The type of art that I create involves a lot of introspection, and reliving a lot of experiences. It can be challenging sometimes, but the feeling of accomplishment and the way that I am able to connect with my clients through my work makes every tough or challenging moment totally worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I refer to my work as abstract surrealist expressionism. My roots, how I started painting, lie in abstract work. I love the challenge of creating something that has multiple layers to it; layers of paint of course, but also different layers of emotion and meaning as well. what one person may see on the surface or on first glance, could be totally different to the next person. Taking ideas and stretching them to different forms and shapes, expressing myself through surrealism while also catering to the wants and needs of my clients is always a challenge that I accept with open arms.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I think the most important lesson is to be patient. A career in the arts, more often than not, is something that is cultivated and curated to each persons specific style or technique. Sometimes it takes awhile for an artist to find their “thing”. The most important thing, in my opinion, is to not force your talent. While it’s important also to learn and practice and take risks, I think that letting your true style find it’s way to you is also just as important.
