Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Elam.
Hi Brittney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated high school in 2015 with no clear direction until a classmate suggested cosmetology school. I pursued it, but struggled to find my place in the industry. I started at Great Clips fresh out of cosmetology school and quickly worked my way up to managing one of their locations, but always felt like something was missing.
In 2020, i took a leap and rented a suite in a salon, but building a clientele from scratch was challenging. After COVID, i returned to Great Clips for stability, but in 2021, an opportunity in lashing reignited my passion, I had taken a lash course in 2017 but never knew how to make it a career as it was very new and upcoming. in 2021 i reached out to a salon looking for a lash artist, trained with them, and built up my clientele while still working at great clips
Eventually , i left great clips for good, but over time the salons environment became draining. I found myself overwhelmed, juggling a full client book while managing salon operations and training others. In December 2023, i made the scary decision to go independent and start my own business. Britterlee Lash was born in January 2024 and i just celebrated one year in business this January 2025 and moved my business to Batavia Ohio to be in a suite to elevate my clients experience. Taking that leap was the best decision i ever made
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road, but i wouldn’t change it for the world. i struggled to find my place in this industry, jumping between jobs, searching for that spark i was missing. i trusted those around me, only to quickly learn that not everyone had my best interest at heart, One of my first mentors wasn’t very kind and really tore down my confidence- at one point they told me i needed a PHD- “poor, hungry, or dying”- to work harder. That experience, along with others, made me realize how difficult it would be to find genuine support in this industry.
I thought i had finally found it when i started lashing at a salon, but after a few years, i again felt burnt out from the negativity. I felt like i was being pushed to put others down to get ahead and to prove i was the “best” when really i just longed for community and really just wanted positive people in my corner who wanted to see everyone grow.
In 2023, i attended The Lash conference which is the largest lash conference in the U.S in Anaheim California. I met so many artists like me, who just wanted to create in a supportive environment. I connected with Maddi Morris from Light Heart Lash, and after hearing her struggles in the industry, i made my decision that weekend that i would go independent.
That weekend i heard a quote that i believe changed my career they said ” Chasing failure took me farther than chasing success ever did.” Every challenge led me to where i am today- and it was all so worth it,
I have since become an ambassador for the Light Heart Brand and found a special community within the brand that’s all about supporting and lifting up other artists

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe taking risks is essential for growth. Every major turning point in my career has come from stepping outside of my comfort zone and betting on myself. The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was going independent and starting Britterlee Lash. Leaving the security of a salon and walking away from a steady paycheck to build something of my own was and still is terrifying, I had no guarantees, just the confidence in my skills and the belief that i could create something better for myself and my clients
The risk paid of in ways i never could have imagines, Not only did i build a thriving business, but i also found true fulfillment in my work, It taught me that fear and uncertainty are always a part of the process, but they shouldn’t hold you back, Some of the best decisions I’ve ever made have been the ones that scared me the most
