Meet Nicole Hennicke of Mantua

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Hennicke

Hi Nicole, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m not sure which part of my story you want to include?
We no longer have our brick and mortar location for our business Old’s Cool.
We’ve shifted gears and now from our personal IG page we do custom rework sweatshirts and custom trucker hats.
We also are DIYERS who are completely redoing an 1800’s farmhouse that we share on IG.
We have always believed in sustainability and thrifting for the majority of home decor that we have. Our clothing reworks are the same, thrifted goods made into new one of a kind pieces.
I’ve been thrifting with my mom since I was a little girl. Growing up on a budget meant doing the best we could with what me had. I love mixing old and new in my clothing and my home.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not.
As for our clothing/vintage finds, we originally had a retail store but found out being a small business in a brick and mortar is nearly impossible.
Fast fashion is killing many small businesses. Many factors have affected our business, but we’ve always stayed true to our mission. Turning one’s junk into another’s treasure.
When we bought our 1800’s farmhouse it was no different.
We wanted to bring back to life a house that held so many memories for others while adding our own to it.
We are creating a space where we can one day showcase our brand on our own little piece of land.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I feel like both my husband and I are jacks of many trades, and masters at none.
We are constantly growing and learning through our mistakes and sharing those with others.
You will always get the raw and ugly along with the beauty that comes after.
I feel this is what sets us apart. Our creations are not always pretty, but we never give up. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows over here and we aren’t afraid to share that.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Time with my family + creating.
Oftentimes, both go hand in hand.
Creating not only gives me an outlet from everyday stresses, but it also provides ways that we as a family can do it together.
I love showing my kids that failing is ok! You can’t really learn if you’re not failing first.
