Life & Work with Tim Tye of South

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Tye

Hi Tim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. I have been a practicing attorney here for 46 years.

Beginning as a teenager, I learned to play the guitar and started writing songs. Except for occasionally recording rudimentary versions in home studios (beginning with a reel-to-reel Dokorder!), I did little to promote my compositions.

In 2009 I decided to record a couple of songwriting demos. I assembled some of my musician friends, found a great sound engineer, and did it. The results were good enough that I kept going until I had eleven songs. Those got released in 2014 under the band name Midnight Sky. The album was “Dark Stretch of Road.”

After a break, I decided to keep going. In 2019 I released “A Few Good Years.”

Finally, in 2023 I released “Last Hope For The Modern World.” This time I hired a publicist named Mike Stover, who helped promote the album. In 2024 the album was an ISSA finalist for band album of the year and a Josie Awards nominee for male country album of the year. I didn’t win, but it was a thrill to be at the Grand Ole Opry as a nominee and not just a spectator.

With Mike’s help, I’m very busy promoting the album and several new singles.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One difficult part has been balancing my music projects with my legal career. And sometimes there have been issues finding just the right musicians for the material.

And it can be frustrating getting just the right result in the studio.

That said, for the most part it has been a very enjoyable ride that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always loved being a lawyer–which is a sentiment that not all my colleagues share.

In addition to the music, I’ve always had hobbies that provided the so-called work-life balance.

Along the way, I’ve been a cave diver, a rock climber, and a cyclist (I’ve crossed the Continental Divide on a bicycle more times than I can count.)

Although I’ve never written a song about any of those activities, they have certainly colored the way I look at the world–and have probably affected my writing at some level.

What matters most to you? Why?
The truth–it seems to be in short supply these days.
