Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Camacho
Hi Katie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in the country, I had instilled a love for nature. Having the freedom to play outside and explore has been a gateway into how I live my life. Now as a wife to a former Marine and homeschool Mom to two kids, I’ve created a strong pull to living a simple and natural life. I believe everything from the food we eat, the medicine we take, to the products we use to clean and put on our skin matters. With all the deceiving information out there, the word “natural” can pretty much mean anything. This creates a lot of confusion and frustration when you just want to do what’s best without wasting your time and money. With this, I have chosen to take matters into my own hands when it comes to trusting the products we use as a family. I started to create my very own using the best of what nature has given us! By focusing in on herbalism, I feel I can create products that not only work best for us as people, but also for the health of our Earth! I find it to be a win-win scenario.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Between the Marine Corps life with my husband on multiple deployments, moving out of state, and having kids, the main struggle I have had in getting this business started has been lack of confidence in education. Even though I have years of continued education, I struggle with feeling that I need to know everything about something before I do it. With the challenges of life not giving me consistent time to focus on this, I have learned that the education never really ends, nor should it! There’s never going to be a moment of realizing “I know everything I need to know,” especially in herbalism. This was a lesson I am very thankful to have learned from my husband, who gave me the gentle push to “just do it!” Without him, I would still be head in the books, not fully confident I can ever start. I owe the start and continued success of my business to my ride-or-die, number one supporter and love of my life, Vinnie. I still to this day continue my education and do not see an end in sight, which I now realize is just the way I like it! It’s scary starting a business from scratch, but I’m so thankful to have the support beside me to make it happen!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Local Grind?
The Local Grind is a small business specializing in all-natural, small-batch, and handmade herbal products for home and body care. We cultivate herbs in our own garden, adhering to organic and sustainable methods. These remarkable herbs are central to our creations, infusing each product with their extraordinary benefits. By reconnecting with our roots, we find the support necessary to achieve harmony with ourselves and the natural world.
Our herbal infused offerings:
+ Facial care including herbal scrub/mask, toner, serum
+ Hair care including shampoo bar and apple cider vinegar hair rinse
+ Body care includes herbal salves, balms, cold-processed soap for body, face, hair and even dishes, lotion bars, body oil, whipped body butter and sugar scrub
What really sets us apart is taking the word “natural” seriously. We use only earth derived ingredients that are either grown in our garden or sourced with the stamp USDA Certified Organic. The only exception to this is our use of grass-fed tallow for our non-vegan soaps & local honey/beeswax. Organic essential oils are what is used for scents. Colors are naturally from clays or herbs. We do not use palm oil for sustainability reasons. You will find absolutely zero artificial ingredients, including fragrance in any of our products.
Along with the top-notch quality ingredients, we also believe highly in sustainability. This is why we focus on sourcing locally whenever possible and use either zero-waste packaging, like our dish soap & shampoo bars, or eco-friendly materials (glass, cardboard, etc.). We are also working with an upcoming new program called Periva that helps customers track their waste-saving by returning any packaging materials to be reused. This works great for our glass jars and tins; and as an extra incentive, we offer $1 off your next purchase with the return!
You can find us enjoying every Saturday morning at America’s #1 farmer’s market, The Worthington Farmer’s Market. This market has brought us so much love and connections that it is central to our success! When you can’t enjoy the market with us, you can find all our products at our online shop www.thelocalgrindoh.com and we’ll deliver it right to you!
We aim to deliver peace of mind and nurturing care to our customers through our products. Our ultimate goal is to promote wellness and kindness towards our planet and humanity. With this mission in mind, I present to you The Local Grind.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about our city is the diversity and availability of things to do. Since homeschooling our kids, we are always looking for the next adventure and educational opportunity. I can happily say that our city is in no short supply of this! I can also say, firsthand, that I am proud to live in a community that clearly advocates for supporting small businesses. The amazing customers I get the pleasure of meeting leave me in complete awe when they continue to return week after week, even in a world where convenience is at an all-time high! This really proves we are heading in the right direction as a community and makes me so proud to be a small business owner here.
