Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Mitchell
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been singing for as long as I remember. I was able to sing before I could walk! I have always been preforming on stage. When I was young I would preform in small church productions, then as I got older I found my group of people at the Lorain Palace Youth Theater in the summer program and MAD* Factory Theater Co in the fall and spring. I loved preforming in shows and at local venues with RockTown Music Academy and my amazing mentor, Jaclyn Bradley. In 2021 I went to the orthopedic doctor for my usual check up for scoliosis, which I have had since I was young, and came out sobbing. I was informed that I would have to have a total spinal fusion to correct the curve. This broke me and I was terrified for my future, but I sang my way through. Then 4 months later in April of 2021, at only 11 years old, I went into the OR, singing! Music has always been something I was connected to. For the next several months I would wonder if life would ever be the same again, if I would ever be able to complete daily tasks the same again. But within just a few weeks I felt I was able to get up on the stage. I walked onto the stage of the Lorain Palace Theater prepared to preform with RockTown and just knew, this is what I want to do. Music had brought me through those doctors visits and times when I would wonder if I would always live life at a disadvantage. With what I know now, I would have the procedure 100 times. It brought up my self confidence and life is back to the same as it was, there was just a lot of recovery to get there. Now I am writing my own music. Music that I feel connected to, it’s a different kind of connection with my music being stories of failed relationships and wishing to find my person, a connection I hope my audience can have as well.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, as I mentioned previously, but one main obstacle is finding people who truly believe in you. Many directors or even just random people who have an opinion about your music don’t believe in you. That’s why I’m so grateful for my circle. My parents, my family, my two closest friends, and my mentors at RockTown. They all make me believe in myself and give me the confidence to go on stage even when I feel my performance is not at it’s best.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known for my music. I prefer to sing but I also have had lots of experience in acting and love the art. I am most proud of my singing and performances in local musicals. The one thing that sets me apart from other is my story, I feel like so many people don’t understand what a person goes through and we really need to focus on the idea that people have their issues and faults and we need to be there for people even in their darkest times.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel that vulnerability is very important. I have said it before, but with my music I want to be vulnerable. I want people to feel the joy or the hurt I was going through when writing a song. Many people do not get to live their life to the fullest, and I understand that. Doing many things such as traveling is nearly impossible these days with prices, but I want to live my life. We could all be gone tomorrow. You could get in an accident or something could happen and you would have nothing to look back upon. I want my legacy to be people remembering the life that I lived, not caring about others opinions, and being my true self.
