Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Winkfield
Hi Brittany , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I remember being about 12 or 13 when I became fascinated with hair artistry. At that time everyone was wearing Iverson braids so I started practicing on my cousins and friends “The Iverson Braids”. After I specialised in that, I was interested in every trend that landed. Stand up braids, swoop braids, shark fins, and crimps were my jam! My parents believed in me so they were very supportive of my aspirations. They bought my salon tools, a stove set and setup shop for me in the garage after I was accepted into Cosmetology School my junior and senior year of high school. I didn’t realise how major that was until later in life. My parents always supported me no matter how wild the dream was or far fetch.
Moving forward I graduated high school with no plan. I didn’t know what to do so I went to college to study Psychology. Loved psychology but college was not for me. After 2 years I came back to Ohio and decided to get my hair license. I went to State Board to apply and they told me had I of waited another week I would’ve had to go back to school. That was nothing but God! I passed and went straight into my first salon. I worked 9-6p at an insurance office then went to the salon afterwards. Long days and nights was my life until I quit about 3 months in. I applied to work on set of NYFW. Once I got the approval I took a bus to New York, stayed in a AIRBNB and worked tirelessly for 4 days straight. I was always very independent but this was different, this changed everything when I got back to Ohio. I quit my job and went into the salon full time with no clients. I always been a risk taker so I was going to make it happen one way or another. 13 years later, I’m on my 2nd salon and thriving.
Currently I am working behind the chair as an Extensions Specialist and after hours in the office wearing many other coats as most business owners do. I believe whatever you decide to do, decide to be great at it so every year I travel and learn either a new skill or take an advanced business course. Im fortunate enough to of traveled domestically and internatiaonlly to advance my skillset.
W Style Lounge is a safe space for all to come and receive a seamless experience no matter if you’re a first time client or returning client.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! Theirs already a lot of uncertainty with being an entrepreneur. In my early years as a beauty professional my biggest issue was trying to operate my business at 100% and I was constantly running on E. As I got older I started realizing the importance of health and wellness, taking time off, learning myself and etc. I had to start taking care of me so I could really show up how my clients need me to. This field is forever changing, you have to stay sharp and always on brand or you’ll be quickly forgotten.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Extensions Specialist and own an online raw hair company. I offer high end extension services such as K Tips, Microlinks, Sewins and much more. My online hair company is for all, in house clients and other consumers. I sell a variety of hair extensions such as wavy, straight and curly.
I am extremely proud of myself for being able to “specialize” in a skill. The ability to say no to things that do not serve my brand and focus on a specific technique is truly a blessing.
How do you think about happiness?
I enjoy traveling, fitness, the ocean and pouring into others. Outside of spa dates, I enjoy the free things in life like being in nature. Things such as going for hikes, water activities, beaches are all serotonins boosters for me.
