Conversations with Kamiylah Bomar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamiylah Bomar

Hi Kamiylah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been singing since a little girl. My mom said when I was born I didn’t cry, instead I was humming, where my nickname “humming bird” came from.
I started music in elementary, being in choirs and as I leveled up in grades I joined an orchestra playing the viola, participated in choirs, plays, a cappella groups and talent shows. I didn’t start recording music until around the year 2017 and started taking it seriously around 2020 where I released my first single “The Sequel” later releasing another single in 2021 called “Stay Awhile”.

But then there was a pause in my career. Many lessons had to be learned on a path of discovering myself and who God really called me to be. I chose to walk the path less chosen because I always knew since a little girl that what God had in store was way bigger than me. I had to heal, and mature and that’s exactly what I did. I answered the call. Now it being 3 years later in 2024 I released my first project “HEALING”. My (EP) which shows my growth and being able to alchemize my pain into power, into something beautiful. Showing others how to stay grounded in love no matter how you were treated or mishandled by others, while also keeping faith. Pursuing your dreams and goals no matter what obstacles and adversity comes your way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey of pursuing music wasn’t a smooth road at all! I took a spiritual route, where I chose to work on myself internally first. I believe internal work is most important when being an artist/creative. Music is very influential, it can influence the listeners outlook on life. I’ve noticed a lot of artists choose to display a facade other than who they really are, because it’s “trendy” and what sells for material gain. But when it comes to music and creating, authenticity is important. As well as being cautious and aware of the influence you’re projecting out to the world.

I think when people first hear about spirituality that it’s all butterflies and rainbows, and it’s actually the complete opposite. Yeah, the good side does exist, but in reality, there’s a lot of purging, letting go of things you love yet no longer serve you. Having to face your shadow self and accepting it. Learning to forgive yourself as well as others. Going through a roller coaster of emotions. But once you come to the conclusion that the ride comes to an end, not saying there won’t ever be another one, but you can finally take a deep breath and enjoy the good side when the ride is finally over.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter mainly known as an R&b artist, yet I can dabble in other genres like Neo/Soul, Afrobeat, whatever I put my mind to I can pretty much do. I sing at events like weddings, funerals, concerts, private events and etc.

I am most proud of my authenticity, being all God created me to be. An example to inspire, lead and heal others to love themselves unconditionally and to keep going no matter what obstacles and adversity comes their way.

What sets me apart is I can’t be labeled. When most people encounter me they already have an idea of who they think I am, until they actually meet me and realize I’m nothing of what they thought.

People try to put me in a box, thinking they know what’s inside. I’d like to think of myself for example a “jukebox”. When you insert your coin, you have an idea of what song you want to hear. Yet, as you shuffle to get to the song you already had in mind. You realize there’s a plethora of other good songs to choose from.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about Cincinnati is our culture and how strong we stand for our city, us against the world kind of mentality. But what I dislike is how when it comes to our city and our city alone it’s an us against us, crabs in a barrel mentality, I want you to do good but not better than me.

Some people have a mindset of, “oh I had to work hard and go through this and that to get to where I am so I’m not helping anyone”. Whole time over looking the fact God chose you to be in that position, God chose you to walk that path to later help others, to change the narrative and not letting your heart harden because of the journey you had to take to get to where you are. What do you think generations before, ancestors, did before you to even allow you the space and opportunity to even live out your dreams, goals and hearts desires, today?

I know there’s so much talent here in our city, I’ve seen it myself, I’ve personally spoken life into others to keep going, but I just don’t see it happening enough from those who really have a larger following/influence. God puts us all on our own journey to experience, evolve and learn lessons. Some lessons to personally keep for ourselves but most of the lessons we learn are suppose to be taught, especially in the black community, so we can break the curse that has been placed over our heads for decades.

I believe the change can happen. Internal work needs to be done in order to get external results. People just have to have the courage to step up to the plate. It will take time, but we have to start somewhere. I truly believe down the road, Cincinnati will be so much more than it is today.
