Check Out Sean Fee’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Fee

Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story into becoming the Director of Mental Performance at The Golf Room starts with my time as a wrestler at West Virginia University. During my time competing as a collegiate athlete I was dealing with a lot of mental struggles in which I didn’t really know where to turn. I put a ton of pressure on myself, I was burnt out, I lost my love for the sport, which led to me quitting after my freshman year. Even though it was a very tough time in my life, I am grateful for it, because it sent me down the road of mental performance where I am able to help athletes through the exact issues that I needed. Every day I now get to help athletes turn their mental struggles into strengths and hold space for those struggling with certain aspects of performance, or just want to build a strong foundation of mental skills to help them in the future. I work individually with clients from all sports, run team sessions for universities, and created a mental performance curriculum for our elite junior golf academy here at The Golf Room. Helping others along their athletic journey is not something I take for granted, and I truly am thankful for every opportunity I get to do so.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a road full of struggles and sacrifice to be able to get to where I am now, but through those struggles I have become better at the work that I do because they have given me the opportunity to use the exact skills that I teach. I also feel like the struggles I’ve been through allow me to connect in a way with my clients that helps me meet them wherever they are at, with an empathetic approach. People don’t want to just be told things and just be talked at. This work starts with relationship building above all and without the adversity I’ve been through in my life, I fear it wouldn’t have given me the perspective I’ve needed to understand the struggles of the athletes that I work with. It’s hard to be grateful for struggle in the moment, but once on the other side, when those same struggles are overcome, those are usually the things that we are most proud of, and why I am dedicating my life to helping athletes get through them as well.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mental Performance is about helping athletes build their mental game from the ground up, and explaining how the brain drives the body, so they’re not just performing to the best of their ability but also enjoying the process a little more along the way. My podcast, The WellSport Podcast is a great way to learn more about me and about the field of mental performance. I interview some of the world’s best Mental Performance Coaches, Sport Psychologists, Olympic Athletes, Dietitians, Strength & Conditioning Coaches and more. I was even lucky enough to fly to Boston to interview the mental coach of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and the Edmonton Oilers Mindfulness Coach and author of The Mindful Athlete and Unlocked, George Mumford.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that one of the most important things in life is to follow the intrinsic pull towards the things we care about. Being yourself in this world can be a very difficult thing and there have been many times where I’ve questioned if everything would work out going down this very niche and specific path, but even in those times I never doubted that it was what I was best at and where I felt the most purpose. Using those factors as my north star has brought me to a place where I get to help athletes everyday, and I am so grateful I stayed the course.
