Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Coppus
Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in the small town of Fostoria, Ohio, where I developed my passion for helping people improve their health. I’ve always been fascinated by the intricacies of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology. I wanted to know why people were struggling and ultimately become someone who could offer them help or advice to improve their situation.
Fast forward to my time in my doctorate program in Atlanta, GA, I encountered a discipline of healthcare known as ‘Functional Neurology’ that was doing some pretty incredible things for patients. I had sought care for my own struggles – POTS from a previous concussion – and I was helped immensely.
Since that experience, I have dedicated myself to learning as much as I can about the brain, how to rehabilitate it, and how to help it to heal naturally.
My career started in Miami, Florida, working for some of the best doctors in the world at South Florida Integrative Health, That clinic had shortly merged with The Neurologic Wellness Institute in Chicago, IL, which was to be my next stop. I moved to Chicago to help grow and lead the Michigan Ave. campus for the next five years. My time in Chicago and Miami allowed me to see and help thousands of patients who were struggling with a variety of different neurological conditions.
I had a tremendous experience, but after much contemplation and soul-searching, we made the decision to open Delta Neuro Health in Columbus, OH, in October 2023. We wanted to move to a place where we could raise a family and also serve the state and community that raised me. It has been incredibly rewarding to be able to bring the unique knowledge and skills that I have learned to this beautiful state and provide hope to people who have lost it.
It has been a whirlwind journey, but an incredibly fulfilling one.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While this journey has been wonderful, I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth. Having dealt with and overcome my own health struggles through school and my wife’s health struggles as we were opening the practice, the road has been a little rocky. We also got pregnant shortly after opening our practice, which is an absolute blessing but has presented it’s own challenges. At the end of the day it has been an amazing, yet challenging journey, but no road worth traveling is ever going to be easy.
As you know, we’re big fans of Delta Neuro Health. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Delta Neuro Health we mainly work with individuals who are struggling with brain-based health issues, providing them with personalized, therapeutic, and rehabilitative solutions. We think out of the box when it comes to working with our patients. We understand that there are shades of grey to a person’s health and function, which is not always addressed when seeking ‘traditional’ medical support.
The type of care we provide is classified as ‘Functional Neurology’. Many patients who have dramatically benefited from this type of care include those struggling with post-concussion syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), migraines, vertigo and dizziness, focus and attention issues, brain fog, and many more. We begin with a thorough neurological exam to identify exactly where the underlying problem is. While important, we are not just looking at your MRI, EEG, or blood tests to try to figure out what is going on, but we also put our patients through a variety of functional tests to uncover more physiological problems. From there, we create a customized treatment plan for the patient specifically based on our findings and their symptoms/goals. Because we believe the brain has the ability to change, so long it’s given the appropriate stimulation and environment, we aim to create that appropriate stimulation and environment through non-invasive therapies to rehabilitate the issues that we’ve uncovered through our extensive testing.
I think the thing that sets us apart from others is the amount of time and attention we give to each patient. We do not rush you out the door or hurry to the next patient. We take the time to listen and understand not just what is going on but how it is affecting your life. We work together with you and your other providers to bring a holistic and cohesive look at your care.
The thing I’m most proud of brand-wise is the consistency in our branding. Our messaging, our tone, our color palette, the music we play, and the way we communicate with patients are all meant to reinforce our purpose, which is to help our patients heal and recover in a peaceful and calming environment.
I guess the thing I’d want your readers to know about our brand is that even though you may have been written off as ‘all of your symptoms are in your head’ or ‘you just have anxiety’ when you know there’s something deeper going on, just know there is hope. We are here, we hear those things all the time, and we have shown countless others objectively through thorough functional testing why they are feeling the way they are. And ultimately, I would want them to know that there is hope that things can get better, even if they have been struggling for years.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My wife and I specifically chose Columbus for several reasons. While I am originally from North West Ohio, I have lived and traveled all over the country, but nothing can compare to Ohio, and nowhere embodies the best of Ohio like Columbus. We considered cities all over the world to move to but ultimately chose Columbus because it is a great place to raise a family, foster community, and grow a business. We love the access to biking and running trails, the proximity to nature, as well as the proximity to all the city-life things we love. I’m a big soccer fan and she’s a big hockey fan, so living in a city where those are the two professional teams was a nice perk, too.
