Check Out Keith Garrett Jr.’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Garrett Jr.

Hi Keith, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised on the east side of Toledo & from a young age, I took a liking to football. My parents tell me, anytime my dad would spin a football on the ground, no matter where I was, I would run up and kick it. They thought maybe I’d be a punter lol. Well I definitely did play football starting as soon as I could in 3rd grade but I was more the running back/linebacker type. I played football all the way til I got to college. I had two jobs by then, & felt it necessary at the time to keep working. So I stopped playing football, although I was in conversation with the head coach at UT about my film and their tryout dates, I eventually lost interest in college altogether after a semester. Around this time is when my interest in creating music began to develop. Don’t get me wrong, music has always been a big part of my life. It’s got me through some dark and tough times for sure. But I just started to freestyle in my voice memos and anytime me and my cousin Turael would link up we’d turn a beat on and do the same thing. I never idolized rappers or wanted to be like anyone when I decided to rap. Music just became my preferred method of expression. That same passion I had for football I realized I had in music, and I wanted to become the best artist I could be from the first time I ever freestyled. Since then, I’ve been writing music almost every day but especially when I feel inspired and I’ve definitely gotten greater over time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest hurdle I’ve had to face in my life happened shortly after I decided to make music. My stress levels hit a boiling point and something in me snapped. I had my first bipolar episode. I ended up scarred up and pink-slipped in the hospital over Easter weekend. My entire reality & perspective was altered, & it certainly wasn’t my last episode. But by the grace of God I’ve been episode free for over two years now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I rap. Nowadays, I like to use lively Detroit type beats, & there’s heavy emphasis on flow in my songwriting. Some of the songs I’m most known for is Tarzan & 50 Birmingham Terrace, but I have music releasing every Friday this October through November. What I’m most proud of is my abilities. I’ve honed my craft for a while now and I’m ready to share my music with the world. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not making drill music or killing people in my songs. I believe the best things you can be are who you are and to be honest, especially with the one in the mirror. I stand for peace love and respect. Loyalty should come with those things in my world.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I started drinking coffee regularly this year.
