Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Longert
Hi scott, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started writing freelance articles about thirty years ago. A short time later I tried my hand at writing full length manuscripts. My first book was published in 1999 and I have not stopped since. To date I have seven books on the market, all of them about Baseball history. I am fortunate that I have a publisher, Ohio University Press for my last five works.
I have been on radio and live television both local and national and I have spoken about one of my books at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I speak throughout northeastern Ohio and appear on various podcasts around the country. My current book is “Love and Loss: The Short Life of Ray Chapman.” He was the only player in Major League history to be killed by a pitched ball. He was just twenty-nine years old.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Until I found a publisher willing to take on my manuscripts, I had a difficult time to get my works in the mainstream. I had rejections from large publishing houses to small. I attempted to get an agent but most won’t help you unless you are published.
Even with a publisher, there are difficult times in meeting deadlines, doing re-writes and locating the best images to appear in the finished work. There are disagreements with editors over material to be taken out of the manuscript and new things to include before the finished product.
The whole writing process can be frustrating in that many times the words don’t flow and have to be re-written several times.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a writer of baseball books, usually centering on Cleveland teams of the past one hundred years.
I do a great amount of research, more than a number of other authors. I have spent a lot of hours scanning microfilm of old newspapers, finding anecdotes and relevant material that is difficult to find.
I am quite proud that many people know my works and purchase them.
What’s next?
I will probably continue writing about Cleveland baseball.
