Community Highlights: Meet Steven Muhammad of Knowledge for LIFE and Refuge Depot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Muhammad

Hi Steven, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story began in Dayton, Ohio, where I was born and raised. When I was around 5 or 7 years old, my parents split up, and my younger brother and I started spending our summers with our father, who had moved to Alabama.
Growing up as a Black teenager, I grappled with finding my own identity and purpose. My journey took an exciting turn when I discovered a passion for comic books. I saw their potential to educate Black youth on history and culture, and my love for them drove me to pursue a professional career with a company called ANIA.
I worked on a character called Ebony Warrior, who fought against corporate and political corruption, striving to bring cultural richness back to the community. However, the comic industry underwent significant changes at Marvel and DC, ultimately causing our small company to fail.
I joined the Nation of Islam in my late 20s. As my knowledge and love for myself and my people, I turned my attention to video production and taught myself how to create engaging content. I began uploading my work to YouTube, which eventually led me to develop educational programs for the Black community on various issues. As my focus shifted to Health and Wellness, I established a non-profit organization called Knowledge for LIFE.
Our platform has grown significantly over time, garnering close to 70 thousand followers online. Through Knowledge for LIFE, I continue to empower and educate people on the importance of health, wellness, and personal growth within the Black community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Despite the challenges I’ve faced along the way, I’ve always maintained a resilient spirit. In my late teens, I was involved in a severe car accident that left me with facial and bodily injuries requiring surgery. Although I’ve since recovered physically, the accident caused some memory loss, erasing parts of my past.
Growing up middle-class during my teenage years presented its own obstacles, particularly in the absence of a strong historical connection or positive role models. This lack of guidance made decision-making quite difficult at times.
Nevertheless, I’ve always embraced a positive mindset, viewing every experience as a valuable lesson. By facing adversity with courage and determination, I have continued to grow and learn, turning obstacles into opportunities for self-improvement and personal growth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Knowledge for LIFE is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to addressing health and wellness issues in the Black community. We create interactive forums where healthcare professionals come together to tackle relevant topics, such as Colorectal Health, Maternal and Infant Mortality, and Generational Trauma. Our current focus is on Generational Trauma, and we will be concentrating on this issue until February 2025. You can find informative articles on mental and physical health on our website, www.know4life.net. We are also actively seeking financial support to continue our mission.
Refuge Depot (www.refugedepot.com) is a for-profit business that shares survival tips, techniques, and equipment. I host a weekly, one-hour program under the same name. What sets us apart is our ability to collaborate with community professionals to address health and wellness issues. I’m incredibly proud that we’ve organically grown over 70,000 followers and have established a national presence.
We’ve authored two books, “Immunity Empowerment” and “The Inescapable Famine.” At Refuge Depot, we help people build survival kits, start home gardens, and assemble to-go bags—just schedule an appointment!

How do you define success?
To me, success is not just about accumulating wealth or achieving recognition. It’s about harnessing the unique talents and skills bestowed upon us by a higher power and using them to make a positive impact on the lives of others. True success is found in the joy and fulfillment of dedicating oneself to a life of service, all while ensuring a comfortable and sustainable livelihood. By aligning one’s purpose with the needs of the world, success becomes a journey of personal growth, deep connections, and a lasting legacy of compassion and kindness.
