Check Out Desiree Green’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Green

Desiree, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child, creating was something I was excited about every day. I loved making things – endless friendship bracelets, so many stories and poems, dyed coffee filters for art, dances, a journal full of original songs for a girl group I formed with my friends (I just knew we were going to be famous). I tried starting my first business in elementary school, which was a “cosmetic company” where I made lip balm from mixing vaseline and koolaid. I loved finding all kinds of ways to express myself and make life fun. As I grew up, I lost some of that spark. As an adult I went into the corporate world for work, and realized how much I wanted more balance; how much of an itch I had to reconnect with that creative part of myself again. I started off during the pandemic doing small crafts, like clay jewelry trays and wire wrapped rings. Making jewelry made me feel that same spark I did as a kid. I loved the process of creating something in my mind, being able to put my hands to use and quiet my brain while I worked, and then having something tangible to admire after. I started accessorizing my outfits like never before, realizing how fun it was to adorn myself in my own creations. I loved looking at what other people created, and just consuming so much originality and self expression. I decided I also wanted to put that into the world, and Scorpio Suns was born.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, yes! My biggest hurdle was getting out of my own way. I had a lot of self doubt about putting my work out there to be perceived. Once I realized I deserved to be confident and sure in myself, I took a leap. It’s been wonderful pushing myself past my comfort zone. Last year I vended for the first time at a market, and I was so nervous! Displaying your creativity out loud to people is such a show of vulnerability; but also empowerment. It’s saying this is who I am, and being proud of it. It was an amazing experience and I had so many great conversations with people. I can’t wait to do another!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I craft beaded and crystal jewelry and accessories with the goal to promote connection, healing, creativity, and self expression. My goal as a queer woman of color is to create a space where everyone feels welcome and beautiful by connecting with their inner selves, and each other. In a world where a lot of us have felt like we needed to shrink and hide ourselves, there is so much beauty in learning how to accept and express ourselves instead.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
What I appreciate about the jewelry industry is that while it’s always changing, it’s nostalgic too (just like me!). We’re seeing a rise of charm bracelets and necklaces, which is very 90s and 00s but also traces even back to the Victorian era. Maximalist statement rings, colorful necklaces and charms, and bright smiley faced beads are reminiscent of so much of the expressive bold jewelry we liked as children in the 2000s. I think we’ll continue to see the rise of maximalist jewelry, mixing metals, and combinations of pearls, chains and beads. With the growing controversy of fast fashion and sites like Shein, I think people will start shifting back towards searching for unique, handmade pieces.
