Hidden Gems: Meet Sasha Sexton of Sasha’s Sourdough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Sexton

Hi Sasha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Sasha’s Sourdough started as a hobby in January of 2023. By a crazy turn of events it became a thriving business in under 6 months! To be honest, I had no intentions of creating a brand and selling sourdough when I made my first loaf. I crave creative outlets, and with being a mom of three young children, my time is very limited.

I managed women’s retail stores for over 10 years, my passion was in fashion, customer service, and business analytics. My resume had nothing to do with the food industry. However, tough times push us outside our comfort zones, and when the discussion came up that I should try to sell my sourdough…I threw myself into it and gave it everything I had.

I researched sourdough in my area. I decided who my customer(s) would be and what my niche is to stand out. I love flavor and put my focus on specialty items of sourdough that are totally customizable by the consumer. Something I didn’t see offered anywhere else. I wanted to provide a boutique bakery experience.

Coming from a long line of entrepreneurs, I always had a deep desire to start something of my own. Ironically, family history shows in 1911 my ancestors opened a bread store off of Goodale Ave. in Columbus, OH called the Brenneman Baking Company.

I opened an Etsy in May of ‘23, and applied for my first farmers market in June; thinking there was no way I would get in. A few weeks later I was sent an email that Dublin Market Bridge Park accepted my application. What would eventually become my “home” market!

Fast forward a year- I’m back at Dublin Market Bridge Park, along with German Village Farmers Market. I bake 200+ loaves for Saturday’s market, and other specialty sourdough baked goods. Selling out in under 3 hrs- which still blows my mind every time.

Within the first year of business I have purchased my first bread oven. Completely converted my dining room into a micro bakery. Created a Porch Pickup that is available every day of the week from 10a-7p. Not to mention my Etsy has almost 900 sales!

There is so much to look forward to with Sasha’s Sourdough. I hope to expand and have a store front in Columbus in the coming year 2025. Currently working on growing my online presence and creating a customized monthly subscription service for all customers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest part is believing you can do it and swallowing any fear that may shake you. I firmly believe I got here today because I followed my intuition and took chances that felt so uncomfortable at the time. No one wants to be the new kid on the block or the person who doesn’t have the experience. What’s funny is I actually thrive in that environment, and I encourage others to do the same.

I’m beyond grateful for my community in Columbus. The family and friends that have been so steadfast. The die hard customers that follow me to each market, or order weekly from another state. The local grocery, to the small businesses that partner with me on specialty items for their menu’s. I could not have imagined the trajectory of this business without their support and encouragement.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sasha’s Sourdough?
Sasha’s Sourdough has a Regal Victorian aesthetic. Making you feel like you stepped back in time (my favorite era) to enjoy a delicious slice of sourdough or a buttery flakey pastry.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
It can be hard to overcome our own sabotaging thoughts. Let alone other’s opinions. Pay attention to all of the positive feedback-more than the few negative. Not everyone will love or support you. Understand it doesn’t change the value of your business and what you do!
