Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Ponsky
Hi Diana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was a high school student, I knew I liked the sciences and I wanted to work within the stem field. My parents encouraged me to look into the medical field. Starting in high school and then throughout college, I worked for a dermatologist after school, and summers. I received a full scholarship to New York University, then went to Georgetown Medical School. There I fell in love with the field of ear, nose and throat. I then became fascinated by the nose, and how complex and humbling a rhinoplasty surgery is. I was recruited to work for University Hospitals in the Ear, Nose and Throat Institute, specializing in Facial Plastic a Reconstructive Surgery. I worked at UH over 10 years, and was director of the division of facial plastics. At this time I’d had 3 children, and my husband, a successful pediatric surgeon/educator, was recruited to give lectures worldwide. I was getting stretched too thin and my kids needed someone present for the few years they would be home.
So I decided to start my own practice in and gave up teaching residents for a few short years. Now they have a rotation with me in my practice. Sometimes I feel my story is- as a female professional with a family, you can “have it all” but maybe not all in the time you want.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not exactly a smooth road. I consider myself lucky to have had good mentors in my life, and to have people who have inspired me throughout. One of my most impactful mentors was a physician who had an office on Park Avenue. When I was in high school, I worked for a dermatologist after school to pay my way for school, and she would always encourage my pursuing a medical career, but I just wasn’t sure. Then years later, I realized that she was teaching me through having me help her after hours, by having me bring her projects to certain society meetings she was exposing me to the possibilities. I had a chemistry professor in college who encouraged me to go into the sciences, and he was a major inspiration. In medical school and beyond, I was lucky to have male colleagues who never put me down. Some were helpful, some were not, but I never felt targeted. Initially it was tougher in a world of men, but overtime there were more and more women throughout the medical arena in which I was in. One of my main challenges personally was balancing family, especially with young girls, and especially with a husband who was also very professionally and academically motivated. I never felt like I was in the right place at the right time- my kids wanted me at home, but I also loved worked. i felt never like i could do everything I wanted to do nor give of myself fully when I was a working mom at the university.
