Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Ashleigh Austin
Tara Ashleigh , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It was almost 24 years ago that I performed as a drag queen for the first time. One night I was plucked from the dance floor at a club in Rehoboth Beach by the house kitty, Tisha Towers. She would steer me in the direction of performing and give me my first shot at the stage. I would go on to host several of my own shows and blossom into performing on some of the biggest stages I’ve ever stepped foot on. The first time I performed, I wore a costume that I made myself, as well as I wig of my own making.. My love for creating fashion looks, and my years as a cosmetologist would lead me to becoming a popular fashion and beauty content creator. Creating wig styles and curating looks and laughs in luxury spaces for my engaged followers. Getting to where I am today was not without struggle and sacrifice but it’s my confidence that has carried me the furthest. Knowing myself and everything about my gifts as a creative is the source of my confidence.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a nonbinary artist I’ve faced some of the wildest unwarranted negativity online. As an artist you’re putting your art out there to be judged and while everyone is allowed their own opinion there are lots of people just sitting behind keyboards and spewing hate for fun. It can be hard to sift through it sometimes but it’s always outweighed by love from followers and new people that enjoy my content. Of all of the struggles I’ve faced the biggest one would have to be motivating myself even when things feel like they’re not happening.

I am a drag artist and content creator. My specialty is beauty and fashion with a side of comical sass. As an artist and performer I pride myself on creating eye catching looks and providing a an entertaining atmosphere. As a professional interior designer and personal stylist of many years, I am inspired by all walks of art and I believe that the way we show up in the world is a huge part of how we feel about ourselves. Being able to create a platform and share my knowledge from over 20 years in the beauty industry is probably one thing I’m most proud of.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice when it comes to finding a mentor is not to show up empty-handed. People are more likely to work with you if you can offer them something in return.
