Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Robinson
Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As is often the case for small, start-up businesses, mine also began in a garage. While I held on to an office job, I outfitted a “cooler” and offered subscriptions to customers. Fortunately, I was able to leave both the garage and the job behind less than a year later when I found a great Lakewood spot and Blossom Flower Bar opened. That first location allowed us to grow our team, our skills and our services including larger arrangements, weddings and sympathy flowers. And since we were now in a great space (with windows!), we could build out the Flower Bar: a full wall of blossoms and blooms where customers can create their own bouquets.
From a corporate office to a dark garage to a shop full of life and covered in flowers – I’m grateful every day and work hard to keep it going!
Since that first store, we’ve continued to grow into a larger Lakewood shop and are also now able to offer our services and Flower Bar in Chagrin too.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our entire business revolves around a product that is not only perishable but unpredictable! Scorching sun at a wedding, stock flowers that come in more cream than peach, arrangements that need delivered in freezing rain … the road will never be smooth. You just have to stay calm and figure it out.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love that the flowers that come out of Blossom Flower Bar are different – a bit more modern, more vibrant and a little unexpected. We love being a part of the floral community that has been around for hundreds of years but knowing that we’re leaving our own mark on it.
And as much as I’m a fan of our own designs, it’s so incredibly amazing to watch customers visit us and be their own designer! They’ve used the Flower Bar to make some truly amazing creations!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
There are so many people who have crossed my path and then been alongside me as I navigate owning and operating a growing business. I’m so thankful to them!
Be open. Be genuine. And be helpful.
It’s pretty likely that no one else will be doing exactly what you’re doing the way you’re doing it. But if you are a baker, I guarantee your dentist who runs their own practice has something of value to offer. Be open to those people you respect even if the similarities in your work and challenges may not be obvious.
You can have millions of connections – but if they all revolve around pretense or image, there’s likely very little valuable substance there. A few genuine connections are far more valuable.
You will likely always have questions or need some guidance in some way. But the same can be said for every single person you come across. I think it’s important to remember that good relationships work both ways – get the help that you need but make sure you’re a resource as well.
