Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Johnson
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been in love with film ever since I was young, but when I wrote a parody version of a book as an assignment for my English class in High School, my teacher at the time made a joking comment that I should write for The Coen Brothers. Obviously she was kidding, but this led to me diving into a rabbit hole of films I had never seen before, including, most importantly, The Big Lebowski. The moment I saw that film, I knew that I wanted to make my own films someday. I loved the intersection of low-stakes crime and humor. I started writing my own versions of short film script ideas in my free time, and eventually managed to find friends I could beg to work on films with me, under the banner Revolter Pictures. We had a few shorts and did a few festivals, and then covid killed all of our momentum. Eventually I ended up meeting Tom Angeletti in Alysm Films and I’ve been working with him primarily since. We have an upcoming film called Body of Walter, which is the most exciting film opportunity I’ve ever had a chance to work on. It’s got an absolutely incredible cast and crew, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we have been working on for so long.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, definitely not. But most things worth doing rarely are. For me, personally, covid was a big struggle. All of a sudden, all of the momentum my team and I had built up was wiped away in an instant. So many festivals were cancelled, so many people in the crew I had built up walked away from filming and I was never able to convince them to come back to it. We tried to keep working through it but kept having films that were never able to complete, for one reason or another. It’s incredibly hard to make films when you have no budget, it’s a shared act of passion amongst a group of talented individuals.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The way that I try to word it, instead of applying a title to it, is that I’m just a dude trying to work on as many films as I possibly can. I love seeing the end result (especially on a theater screen) and knowing that I helped make it possible in some way. I do whatever I can to help. I’ve run boom, grip, slate, written, acted, directed, produced, etc. I’m just there to do whatever I can to make a film work.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Not really, just that whoever’s reading this, I hope you have an awesome day today!
