Artist of the Day: Nikki T. Anthony

Today’s Artist of the Day features an interview with Nikki T. Anthony. Please find our conversation below.

Let’s jump right into your art and creative works. What should folks know?
I’m the award-winning author of The Price We Pay, born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where my love for writing sparked as a teenager. I wasn’t always Nikki T. Anthony however-I had to become Nikki T. Anthony.

Growing up, I decided that poverty would not be a life sentence for me, so I turned to a space that could take me to new places mentally. That space was the Chicago Public Library. It was there that I was allowed to escape my reality by immersing myself into a world other than one of my own.

As an avid reader that used literature as leverage in my own life, it is my mission to use my influence to encourage young adults around the world to take the novel approach to change their own circumstances through reading fiction.

Who (or what) has your work been inspired by? Do you hope your work inspires others? If so, what message do you want them to be inspired by?
I’m definitely inspired by young adult females. I say this because during my youthful years, I made a lot of bad decisions that could have altered my life in a negative way, but they didn’t because I was determined to overcome those things. Dropping out of high school, fostering a toxic relationship with my parents, and even allowing my pain to project my feelings were all life events that I found a way to use to my own advantage.

Young adults-particularly young adult females, experience crashing lows along with soaring highs, and through the lens of my own bad choices, I want to be able to do my small part as a change agent by creating characters that look like them, feel like them, and share similar experiences with them. I want to be able to relate to them by letting them know that I understand them. Even if it’s through fiction.
