Life & Work with Evelyn McBride

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn McBride.

Evelyn McBride

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I’ve always known I wanted to be creative. There weren’t any artists or creatives in my family, so I learned what graphic design was when I took a class in high school about how to use Photoshop. After high school, I studied design at the Columbus College of Art & Design and graduated in 2021. After graduating, I wanted to try new mediums to express myself creatively. In October 2021, I participated in an event called “Chalk the Block,” where artists created 10×10′ temporary chalk murals at Easton Town Center while shoppers watched over the weekend. I was so excited when I got an email that I was picked to participate; I didn’t know what to expect when applying. However, that event was so much fun. It’s always nerve-wracking to paint or create chalk art live, but it was great to be out and about creating with other artists. In 2024, I moved to using acrylic and aerosol to paint Central Ohio murals. Lately, I’ve been working more with local businesses to help tell their stories and beautify their spaces through painting. I also still love participating in art events and festivals. I am fortunate that I’m able to do what I do for a living, and I’m always looking forward to the next project!

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s been some challenges, especially around my identity as a trans woman. I’ve gotten quite a few negative comments about my identity in-person at events as well as online that range from uncomfortable to threatening. It can be frustrating to have others think that sharing your art is an opportunity for them to share their opinions on your existence. Lately, I’ve been prioritizing taking care of my well-being and mental health while continuing my creative practice.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I work in both graphic design and murals! A lot of the skills needed overlap between the two. When I paint, I usually use very vibrant colors with a vector-like style, similar to the illustrations and designs I create when I design. It’s also nice to have one medium be more outside and physical, which is nice if I’ve been watching a screen too much. Lately, I’ve enjoyed working with local businesses and organizations to paint murals in their spaces. I’m excited about some projects I’ll work on later this year!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My wife, for sure! She’s always encouraged me to pursue my art and is always there to help support me. The Columbus art & design community! I’ve met so many wonderful folks through getting involved and have gotten to work on some of the projects I’m most proud of because of them!
