Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Farley.
Hi Michelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Oh, where do I start? Let’s say I was that kid with a wild imagination—the kind who’d spend hours scribbling away in notebooks. I wasn’t just jotting down random thoughts; I was crafting worlds. My stories weren’t about superheroes or far-off galaxies. Instead, I wrote about everyday kids, like the ones I grew up with, who found themselves in extraordinary situations. It was my way of seeing the magic in the mundane.
Fast forward a bit, and I channeled that passion for storytelling into something more structured. I went all in, studying creative writing in college and pursuing a master’s degree. Those years of study? They were like boot camp for my creativity. I got to refine my craft, learn the ropes of compelling narrative, and understand what makes a story connect.
Then came 2012, a pivotal year for me. It was like many of my paths converged, and suddenly, starting my own business made sense. I’d been this go-to person for writing in my circle. Friends, family, and the extended network—they’d all say, ‘You need something written? Go to Michelle.’ So, I thought, why not make it official? Why not start a boutique agency where I could bring stories to life for brands and entrepreneurs who didn’t just want content but wanted to connect with their audience?
So, I took the small-business leap, and let me tell you—it was everything I thought it would be. It’s been a whirlwind of meeting fascinating people, tackling diverse projects, and seeing the impact of well-crafted words. Every day brings a new challenge and story to tell, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s incredibly fulfilling to help others share their vision and see them thrive because we’re all a bit like those kids in my old notebooks—ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Not. Like any business, there have been plenty of bumps, especially in the creative industry. Growing my client list and hitting those quarterly goals—it’s been tough. There’s been a lot of learning on the fly, adapting to new challenges, and some growing pains. One of the most significant curves thrown my way was the rise of AI in copywriting. Initially, I saw a dip in product descriptions and website copy requests. Many of my clients started opting for AI solutions, which, although cost-effective, often lack the human touch that makes content pop. That’s the thing—AI can be efficient, but it doesn’t quite capture the vibe and cadence that a human writer can bring to the table. So, instead of fighting the tide, I pivoted. I transformed my business from Michelle Farley Writes to Sync and Flow. The idea was to fill a niche where businesses often find themselves in a pinch—needing someone to step in seamlessly when a team member is out. Whether it’s covering for maternity leave, medical leave, or just an extra set of hands on deck for a big project, I adapt to the team’s needs, ensuring continuity, creativity, and impact.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Starting Sync & Flow was a natural step in my entrepreneurial journey, stemming from a deep-seated passion for storytelling and a desire to fill a unique niche in the copywriting landscape. As a one-woman operation, I bring a personal touch to every project, ensuring that each piece of copy meets the moment’s needs and enhances the overarching narrative of the brand I’m working with.
What I specialize in at Sync & Flow isn’t just writing; it’s understanding. I dive deep into the brands I work with, adopting their voice and objectives as my own. This isn’t about temporary fixes—it’s about creating lasting partnerships and delivering consistent, impactful content that resonates with audiences.
What sets me apart? I can seamlessly integrate into any team, project, or time. My clients value adaptability and commitment to authenticity the most. They know that when they bring me on, I’m not just filling a gap—I’m enhancing their team’s capabilities and helping to propel their brand forward.
I’m incredibly proud of how Sync & Flow has grown, particularly in how I’ve adapted to changes in the market. With the rise of AI, many traditional copy tasks have been automated, but there’s still a significant demand for the human touch in storytelling. That’s where I thrive, bringing creativity and a personal connection that AI can’t replicate.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from growing up.
One of my favorite childhood memories was the day I got my first library card from the Cleveland Public Library. Before that, I was stuck with the school library’s limit of one book a week, hardly enough for an eager reader like me who’d finish in a day or two. Getting that library card felt like winning a golden ticket. Suddenly, I could check out stacks of books and fall into countless adventures. It began an endless love affair with words and worlds beyond my own.
