Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Mowery. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Access Alley was founded by Leah Mowery in 2007. It started with a property clean-out service called Access Properties and Clean Up. Helping realtors with foreclosed homes and individuals clear out the homes of loved ones who have passed away. Also, working with my husband in construction and saving materials that were thrown away. Most of these items would have ended up in a landfill, but I saw purpose and value. Having a hard time throwing out these treasures, I decided to repurpose items and make something beautiful. I love mixed media artwork, repurposed furniture with unique features, and making something brand new out of antiques.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The retail space rented for Access Alley needed to be remodeled. This process took over a year and more than budgeted. Securing loans and accepting the right vendors, marketing, and resources have all been challenging. My health and my family’s health have been concerns that divide my time and energy to accomplish the goal of creating my art and displaying it in my store.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I don’t have a degree from college. My experiences are in real estate and construction. My husband and I have a construction company, and I saw potential in the items that were discarded. I love to take those items and repurpose them into art and practical, useful items.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I do not count on luck. I do believe that God has called me to use my resources to bring hope and healing to my community. With God, all things are possible.
