Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Suciu.
Hi Maria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Maria Suciu, and I was born and raised in Constanta, Romania, by the Black Sea shores!
I was always fascinated by the power and the immensity of the Black Sea, having inspiring walks on the sandy beaches!
During the beautiful summers growing up, I used to enjoy the sun rises on the beaches!!! Something so special to me to be part of the nature, be in the middle of nature, and enjoy the power of the beautiful planet Earth!
One of my hobbies growing up was artistic live events, from classic music to great concerts, ballet, and drama. The Stage always fascinated me! Since 2nd grade, I started paying in a school play until 8th grade. In my 20s, my artistic career culminated in dancing on a big stage with other performers in an amazing piece of music and dance created by famous Romanian artists!
Later on, being student in college, I’ve had the opportunity to create, produce, and host a TV show for teenagers and be part of the News team in one of our local TV stations. These years were an amazing experience in my life, and definitely the perfect touch for shaping my personality and confidence of a long ago, very timid and shy young woman!
Growing up, my mom had a very important role in my life! An inspiration of a very hard work woman, intelligent, and yet devoted to give her children the best education and care after becoming a widow at age of 32.
Her inters in personal care and fashion made me interested to follow in her steps. In my spare time growing up, I would spend time on my own image, self-taught about natural remedies for skin care, manicures, hair products, and make-up, and reading in magazines and newspapers about different recipes for beauty and trying them on. Later on in life, I’ve started collaborated with a great Esthetician who would be part of my success image team in my life!
During the long summer breaks, along with spending time in the nature, being in middle school, I’ve started learning English language for myself, by myself! I always liked languages: French, Italian…
Growing in a big Rumanian family, during our family parties, my family used to ask my to help them if they were not feeling well or tired! They realized that my magic worked: massaging their temples, neck, shoulders, and wrists while praying for them would help them to feel rejuvenated and great again…
Later on in life, with my two brothers, I started my career in advertising, a company that my brothers opened while they were students in college.
7 years later in advertising business, I’ve been reconnected with my friend from my childhood – now a young man who came from America to visit his hometown in Romania!
My full-of-life friend from childhood soon became my husband! Gabriel Suciu brought me to America!!! True love story!
In 2003 we came together in America planning to do great things together in our life! We have started a new life together in a completely different country!!! I was, for sure, an alien!!!
America was for sure a new chapter in my life! A new world but full of opportunities! I was very excited and optimistic, even I didn’t know where to go, how to get anywhere and so on!!! I was lost driving on my own neighborhood, on my own street… But that was not a problem for me… I kept on going!
In 2004, I decided to go to School and become an Esthetician. How that happened? It started with a simple act of kindness! My mother-in-law asked me one day if I can do a massage on her face. She was a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Licensed Esthetician at the time… After just couple of minutes of my massage, she was deeply relaxed and asleep. I was very happy for her!
Later on, she told me how wonderful she felt during the massage, and she suggested me to go to school for esthetics. She could feel my talent and my healing touch!
That was not planned! One year later, I finished the esthetic school, took my Esthetic Ohio License with the hope that one day I will open my own business.
My husband and I decided to make the step! In 2006, December 7th, my husband and I, opened officially Callatis Spa! Callatis means “The most beautiful” in Greek language, and Gabriel got inspired by the name of one of the Romanian cities named Callatis from the Roman Empire time! The rest is history for our marriage and our business ventures!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since 2006, I dedicated my career to help women, children, and men different ethnicity and cultures, people from all over the world to become more beautiful, feeling better, enhance their appearance, comfort them, leaving after the Spa services experienced with me full of life, vitality, harmonious, relaxed and at peace. My purpose is to give all Balance to Mind, Body, and Soul!
Equilibrium – Good balance!
Nothing is random, everything in our life is a destiny, a journey, everything is happening for a reason! We might not know in life why we are doing different things, why we are learning or doing different skills, why we are reading or listening to different materials, why we are going to different transformations, good and bad… Why are we meeting different people… we all can have an impact in each other life. All is coming together and will make sense in life sooner or later!
Looking back in my life, I didn’t know that I will come one day to America but being a child, I’ve learned by myself and by my own desire English Language.
Looking to find my way in life, I didn’t know that one day I will make a career from a talent that was deep inside of me, and I was using it on others without to understand until late that was meant to be!
Our life is a wonder and is a wonderful journey that one day will be revealed to YOU! Until then, do the best you can every day, do everything you do with all your heart, have joy while you do it, be kind and humble, and one day, all will come together for you! The whole!
Struggles? Coming from Europe and opening a new business in America is a lot of courage, dedication, sacrifice and hard work. Building customers while you are new in a country is almost impossible. But all is possible if you believe!
Having my baby in the second year of this business was another success for my little family here. Our son, Michael, grew up with Callatis Spa! 2009 was the year when I became a proud American Citizen, too!
2020- Corona Virus – was scarry time and almost intimidating… but after being temporary closed by the State Board of Cosmetology for Corona Virus, I came back even more eager to help people in that hard time for everyone. People were lonely, scared, and away from their family, so they found a refuge at Callatis Spa!!! What an honor and great memories to serve people when they need you the most!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?

Esthetics will always influence people to overcome depression, anxiety, and stress. This is the industry that will go hand in hand with any recovery type, stress reduction, helping people to live their life happier and healthier.
