Hi Alayna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Alayna Bouie, I am a cosmetic chemist, with a degree in Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design and Masters in Industrial Pharmacy from the University of Toledo. I had the vision to develop and share the beauty solutions that I found to be beautiful and simple with quality ingredients. I approach formulating our products with an understanding that skincare and makeup are an important science as well as an art. We use research on the biology of skin and chemistry to create products that work for everyone. I wanted to start an honest company that does not sugarcoat the process of making our products. Shereen Cosmetics is a company that uses science as a medium for understanding what ingredients are actually safe and ethical. My purpose here is emphasizing education, and offering understanding for anything you put on your skin.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not; it has been a learning curve for sure. I have had to grow so much since our beginning in February 2020. What was first a passion project became something that I needed to put on all hats, not just a chemist in a lab, but also a regulatory person, legal team, business manager, social media manager, everything. I am learning to love it, but I had to go through a lot of trial and error to create a system that works. I still work on it every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in blending beauty, science, and art together. I like to think of myself as a technical artist kind of. My main specialty is color, and I always loved color science. It’s so cool that I get to create beautiful products with the science of knowing how colors work together on their own and on various skin tones. It is so much fun to me. I have been working in the industry for some time now and have had the opportunity to work with amazing brands that have products in Sephora and Ulta. One day, I hope to be just like them!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I am a huge fan of the Beauty Brains and Gloss Angeles podcast. It helps me stay up to date with all things beauty and science. This is a field that is constantly changing and innovating, so keeping updated is a huge part of my job as a founder.
