Daily Inspiration: Meet DAPHYA

Today we’d like to introduce you to DAPHYA. They and their team shared their story with us below:

DAPHYA

“Hi, my name is Daphya & I rap.” was always the slogan. These days, DAPHYA (now in all caps) has elevated as a songwriter, top liner, singer, podcaster, & still raps her ass off, of course.

LA-based artist DAPHYA was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, but moved to Elizabeth, NJ, early in her life and has claimed both while spending most of her time all around NYC. Her music ranges from deep and thought-provoking lyricism to her signature comedic punchlines, influenced heavily by northern rap styles. She has opened for Eminem, graced the Summer Jam festival stage, made appearances on Fuse TV/Shade 45/MTV, and performed numerous times in multiple cities across the country.

She now offers song-writing services while releasing music and performing live regularly to showcase what she has to offer other artists looking to collaborate and for her genuine love of the sport. She also connects with other artists through her podcast, The Third Pod, since introducing guests to the format in 2022.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After driving from her home on the East Coast to Los Angeles, I found myself alone in a new city, discovering the only people I trusted were not worthy of the trust gifted. Shortly following the move, I would be involved in my first car accident with no moral support nearby immediately after performing weeks later, all the new stresses caused me to have a panic attack, leaving me to be shocked with a defibrillator on an ambulance ride to the hospital where I would undergo an emergency heart procedure. Only months later would I find myself on another ambulance ride to the hospital with symptoms I worried were related to a stroke, despite my vitals being cleared by paramedics. Insisting to be brought to the ER for an MRI, I was told there was a possibility I have multiple sclerosis. Only a few months after that, I was officially diagnosed. I used this life-altering year of 2023 to regroup and reprioritize, promising to use my voice to spread awareness of many issues revolving around my recent experiences, both personal and medical.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I’m nothing but an empathetic and imaginative person with a love for music and writing. These strengths combined make me a great songwriter, and what sets me apart is mainly my eclectic and experimental taste.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
I learned that my self-proclaimed “loner” title came in very handy. I used the isolation to focus on my health and lost 50lb in six months during quarantine. That self-discipline also got me to finally start and complete my debut album, PHASES.
