Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Wynn.
Hi Rachel, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I am an alumni of the School for Creative and Performing Arts where I found my love for MakeUp. After graduating in 2006, I began to explore makeup as a freelance makeup artist and went on to start my first business called Image By Rai. As time went on, I realized how good I truly was at makeup and decided to pursue it as a full-time career. I attended Western Hills School of Beauty and Hair Design, where I received my Advanced Cosmetology license with the state of Ohio. During my time in school, I worked retail for brands like Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Ulta, PUR COSMETICS. NARS, and Becca just to name a few. I received amazing training from each of these brands as far as product knowledge was concerned, which lead me to ultimately take a pro class with some of the world’s top makeup artist at the IMATS show 2017. This is where it all changed for me. I began to take my career to the next level and became full time as a makeup artist. I also launched my first cosmetic line and changed the name of my business from IMAGE By Rai to Rai Wynn Beauty. From that point, we have been building toward a salon concept studio just for makeup artist, and in September of 2023 I opened Cincinnati’s first Black Owned MakeUp Salon Studio in Downtown Cincinnati called THEE MAKEUP ROOM.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Lots of obstacles have come up, especially in our market because there are so many people who can pop up and call themselves makeup artist without actually ever going through the proper channels. The biggest struggle, I would say, is funding and finding employees. The climate for workers is very tough right now. Many people see beauty as their side gig and not their main job which limits their ability to actually grow their business. There is funding out there and available it just takes a lot of patience and time to research what’s right for you and your business.

Last, we have The Quick Face Glam, this service is perfect for my girls who are in a rush or need a freshen-up before a meeting or on date night. This quick 30 min services refreshes skin and revives any look.
Our clients love us because not only do we offer makeup, but we also offer facials, as well as facial waxing. Everything from your Brows to your chin! Brow Tinting is also available and helps with Maintaince in between those makeup appointments.
We also offer packages for client who are serious about their glam and serious about saving some money as well.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that our city to building and supporting strong small business in our local area. There are a lot of opportunities available to young entrepreneurs and downtown is a beautiful area that is growing. Least thing I like is that we can be very confined to the people and things we know. Very conservative, which can leave artistic people searching for a place to “fit” in.
