Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Greene.
Hi Sam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I used to have a lot of chronic gut issues that impacted my health and wellness in serious and profound ways, and I really was not getting a lot of help from Modern Medicine. About 10 years ago, I decided I no longer wanted to suffer daily and decided to take matters into my own hands. I slowly began educating myself about how the body works and how herbs and healthy diet can play a major role in sustaining and maintaining optimal health. I eventually discovered the root cause of my digestive issues, and as I worked to resolve them, I lost about 100lbs, and my health improved dramatically. I decided that I wanted to help others heal using herbs nutritional and lifestyle changes, so I started a Clinical Herbalism practice here in Lakewood. I attended The Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine’s clinical herbalism intensive program and am now operating my practice full-time.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would not say the road has been smooth in the least. This is simply because most people don’t know what clinical herbalism is or that it is even an option available to them. I have to say a lot of my success has been due to luck. Things were slow at first, and I had to Door Dash to make enough money to pay the bills. Eventually, I met several amazing people (a Chiropractor whose office I practice out of, a midwife, and a hypnotherapist) along the way that steadily referred enough clients my way that I could go full-time. The fact that these amazing women believed in me and what I do really helped me sustain the momentum in spite of slow initial pace.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Materia Medica, LLC?
I am a Clinical Herbalist and I absolutely love helping people find root causes to chronic health issues. Some of the tools I use include traditional eclectic herbal remedies (tincture, tea, capsule an many, many more,) modern nutritional science (this may include diet changes or nutritional supplements,) functional bloodwork interpretation, and lifestyle changes. I often tell people I bridge the gap between ancient and modern which means the plans I develop for people often include herbal remedies that go back centuries, but also include functional bloodwork interpretation to allow me to make precise recommendations for supplements, diet, and lifestyle changes. This approach allows me to help clients discover root cause of their illness rather than offering a band-aid remedy that only mutes symptoms.
I am not one of those herbalists that are opposed to modern medicine. In fact, I view modern medicine as a miracle in many cases. However, the truth is that there is a major gap in chronic health outcomes. I believe that what I do as a Clinical Herbalist fills that gap while also maintaining respect for the amazing work of those who chose to dedicate their life to modern medicine. I frequently tell people that what I offer is not an alternative to seeing your doctor; rather, it is intended to work within the current paradigm.
The vast majority of my clients live with chronic health issues that drastically affect their lives. While I have helped with many varying issues, my current specialty is the gut-immune-nervous system connection. The gut is the gateway to health, and it communicates with every other part of the body. When there is an imbalance in the gut, we are more likely to experience impaired immunity as well as various nervous system issues that can create a really nasty loop that is really challenging to live with and that negatively affects every other part of the body. By focusing on the connection between these three body systems, I am able to help people find sustainable resolutions to the issues they’ve lived with for so long.
Here is a list of some of the issues I have helped people with:
Diabetes, Insulin Resistance, Blood Sugar
GERD, Acid Reflux, Indigestion
IBS, Chron’s Disease, Celiac, Gastroparesis
SIBO and Leaky Gut
Anxiety
Stress
Thyroid issues (hyper and hypo)
Urticaria, Dermatitis, Rosacea
Colds and Flus and rehabilitation from illness
Insomnia and Sleep Issues
Nutritional and Diet Education
What matters most to you? Why?
Helping clients find sustainable resolutions to their issues in as little time possible. Too often, people are given band-aids that mask symptoms and allow the issue to fester and grow. As the issue grows and keeps returning, this makes people feel desperate, and often, they reach out to many different types of practitioners and spend a lot of money. This desperation is taken advantage of by many in the alternative health field, which is just wrong. It is of the utmost importance to me to help each and every client resolve their issue in as affordable and sustainable a manner as possible.
