Life & Work with Felicia Boyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Boyd.

Hi Felicia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my business in July of 2020 when the world shut down due to COVID. I was working from home, but I needed an additional creative outlet to keep my brain busy. I really don’t like just sitting around! Funnily enough, I actually started my apparel business making stickers! I turned my digital drawings into portable pieces of art on the go. I started with just three sticker designs and eventually expanded to offer over 20 hand-drawn sticker designs in my shop. As my business grew, I began offering additional items such as keychains, magnets, and pins; all made from my digital art. I had to do tons of research and was able to find a manufacturer that could take my digital art and turn it into quality novelty items. After about one year into my business, I decided to expand once again and began making t-shirts! I still absolutely love drawing and creating art, but I discovered that I also REALLY love making shirts. While there was a TON of trial and error involved with making apparel, I really enjoy all of the different styles and looks you can achieve with bleaching and dying shirts. There is so much time and effort that goes into creating apparel, but when I get to see and hear how happy my customers are with their purchases, it makes it all worth it!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I mean, if we’re being honest… being a business owner is NOT for the faint of heart. I think that everyone experiences the same ups and downs of running a business, regardless of what you sell. Sometimes there are slow days, weeks, or even months in sales, and that can really make you feel defeated. Sometimes we might feel a little bit of that imposter syndrome. Then with social media (sometimes the bane of my existence), there are times where you might start to compare yourself to other businesses. THAT can really give you a complex! I truly believe that all business owners experience these things to some degree, and there have been SO MANY times where I thought maybe I should just throw in the towel. I’ve really had to work hard to stay focused on MY journey and what’s in front of me. The most important thing to remember as a small business owner is that we are all at a different place in our journey, and no two paths will look the same!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I believe The Busy Mama Co. is most well-known for the sarcastic, sassy, and sometimes dark humor I bring to my apparel and gift items. Many who know me know that I have a fondness of coffee, skellies, and all things spooky. Several of the designs that I offer often include skulls or a snarky coffee quote. And I will say a vast majority of my customers 100% relate! My goal with all of my products is to get a smile, a laugh, or an “Oh my God, why is that so accurate?!” when people look at them. It makes my heart happy to see, and that is also how I have gotten to build relationships with so many incredible people over these past few years.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I feel like starting a business is risk in itself! Every step of growing a business is a risk because you really don’t know 100% what the outcome will be. You don’t know if people will like a certain product if it will sell if it will flop. If I look back at when I started The Busy Mama Co., each time I expanded the products I offered, I took a risk. I had to invest money into something, not knowing if it would do well. I think that risk-taking can be really scary, but it can also be very rewarding. We just never know what could be if we don’t take the chance.
