Exploring Life & Business with Kara Mumford of The Trauma Therapy Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Mumford.

Hi Kara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated high school living out of my 96 Toyota Avalon with my 2-year-old. We were homeless and couch-surfed with family and friends. Every night, I looked at my baby girl, and I knew in my bones that we had to get out of here, and my only ticket, the only thing I was good at, other than being her mom, was school. I had to steal my mom’s taxes to apply for federal aid to go to college because she just didn’t understand why I needed it to apply. With grants and scholarships, I had a full ride to Slippery Rock University, plus paid daycare. It was my dream school, my grandparents lived in Slippery Rock, and they were one of my only supports. I soon realized my passion for Psychology and the universe blessed me with two more children, so I pursued a Master’s in Social Work so that I could take that passion to making a real change in families.

In my Master’s program, I met some of my best friends and so many like-minded people. I realize now I was very idealistic, and I started working in Outpatient Community Mental Health as part of my internships. I thought trauma was just one chapter in the diagnosis manual, but I was seeing it every single day in every client that I worked it. I am only one person, and I only have so much room on my caseload. But in creating The Trauma Therapy Company, we could create waves of healing in not only our community but the entire state of Ohio. The pandemic was life-changing in so many ways, but for me, it opened up the world of telehealth.

We envision The Trauma Therapy Company to be a place where providers lead with their heart as much as their minds, have the self-awareness and courage to do their own root work, adhere to ethical principles, and know that all people are good at their core.

We envision Ohio, where all survivors have access to information and treatment to thrive in their future, creating waves of healing across generations.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I often say I am running on Caffeine, God, and Google. There are so many areas that I had to learn on my own through research and talking to like-minded counseling business owners. I started out researching what you need in order to open a counseling agency and went from there. I hired the right people to hold me accountable because it can be lonely owning a business. There are many things that I had to scratch and throw out and start again. It takes me about 3 tries to complete most things. My past employer even tried to sabotage me by filing false accusations. It is clear how unhealthy the community mental health arena is, and we want to change that and offer providers an alternative. All of the struggles that I have been through starting this company are very beneficial to the providers that have joined me on this journey because I can direct them on how to start their own agency with the full support of The Trauma Therapy Company.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a trauma treatment center treating all of OHIO. We believe in the good in people. We treat those that have survived abuse, maltreatment, neglect, natural disasters, victims of violent crimes, or other adverse life experiences. We are transparent with our clients and providers about the efficacy and risks of the highest evidence-based practices that we use. We develop relationships with our survivors as individuals first and then have them lead the trauma treatment with our consultation and expertise. We use ongoing assessment measures to compare and show real progress across treatment. We teach skills for use outside of the therapeutic hour to heal and recover from the reactions of trauma. We work at the root cause of the traumatic stress reactions, the experiences themselves. People working with us believe the good in themselves.

Alright, so before we go, can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always open to helping others. Anyone can schedule a free consultation with our providers and myself on our website, TraumaTherapyCompany.com

We are always trying to help people find us on Google. This is very hard for therapists to ethically achieve because social workers should not engage in solicitation of testimonial endorsements (including solicitation of consent to use a client’s prior statement as a testimonial endorsement) from current clients or from other people who, because of their particular circumstances, are vulnerable to undue influence.

NASW Code of Ethics, 2017, 4.07.b

There is no ethical restriction on asking non-clients to review your work online.

We need reviews to get our business on the map if you will, online so clients can find us.

Please include these things in you review, where possible:

-Your relationship to us, with emphasis that you are not a past or current client.

– How you are able to directly know our work and/or the limitations on your knowledge of our work.

– A reminder to clients that leaving a review can put their confidentiality and relationship with the therapist at risk.

Here is the link if you have a minute to review our business online if you are not a current or past client.
