Life & Work with Aaron Troyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Troyer.

Hi Aaron, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started playing guitar when I was super young, my whole family is musical, and that stuff kind of naturally made its way into my life. My dad owned a music store and would give lessons, so I took guitar lessons with him for a long time. Eventually, that led to me getting in bands throughout my teenage years, and then in college, I would have been in bands that toured the U.S. For quite a few years, I was the lead singer and guitar player for a band called Come Wind. We did numerous national tours and recorded several albums. It was during that time that I realized that my main interest in music stemmed from songwriting and production. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy playing a gig here and there, but the thing I love most is crafting a great song and then finding just the right combinations of sounds to make it work through the speakers. In 2019 I started a songwriting project called “The Blue Winter.” These are songs that I write, produce, perform, and mix myself (with a little help from some special friends). Through that project and a few others, I found that I just absolutely loved working in a studio environment. I ended up producing quite a few albums for friends and friends of friends for the next several years. Then in 2022, I opened up Red Bird Studio – a studio that’s open to the public where people can come and work with me on their songs, mixes, and recordings. A lot of my favorite musical endeavors that I do now either stem from The Blue Winter or the recordings I get to do at Red Bird Studio.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think as an artist’s there are always struggles in one way or another. I think for me a lot of times when one band or project ends it can be really easy to think that the best days are behind you. That has always been a struggle for me. That outlook never has to be the case, though. You can always pour yourself into a new project and learn to love it in the same way – it just takes a ton of patience and resilience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think both in recording and songwriting, I want to do things that are honest and real. I don’t want to write songs about whatever the latest trend is – I want to write songs that mean something profound to me. In the same way, I want to make recordings that are unique and use real sounds. I want to capture beautiful performances and hear real instruments making notes.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family. I have a wife and a four-year-old son. I can fully relax around them and leave the stress of day-to-day life behind when I come home and spend time with them.

Also, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and fried chicken. haha
