Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Sledge.
Hi Erik, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well, I found my love for drums in church. Growing up, I would watch the church drummer, Earl Nash, in awe. Then I would go home, pull out the pots and pans, and do my best imitation of him. My grandmother saw my love and passion, and bought me my first drum set when I was 2. I’ve been obsessed ever since. In middle school, I attended Cleveland School of the Arts where I was in the band program, and met some of the best musicians in the world.
The Cleveland music scene also played a pivotal part in my career. Jordan Carter, Aj Curry, Carlos Franklin, Joseph Eff, and Myron Gardener are just a few of many musicians that poured into me, and helped mold me into the musician that I am today. Fast forward 15 years, I’ve been blessed to share the stage with amazing musicians, creatives, and artists nationally and internationally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely NOT been a smooth road. One struggle along the way was dealing with naysayers. The people that don’t see the vision, don’t believe in you, and always have something negative to say. Honestly, it used to get to me until I used that as motivation to become the best version of myself. Another struggle was dealing with the fluctuation of stability as a musician. Typically, work during the winter season slows down for us. It’s best to have multiple streams of income, so when the going gets tough you can keep on going!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a full-time musician. I also am a drum instructor, and recently dove into the lane of becoming a musical director. My second show as a musical director is at the end of April with R&B artist, Erika Kayne. The genres I excel in are Gospel, R&B, Rap, Funk, Soul, and Pop.
As a drummer, I am known as being musical, a powerful player, and for making music FEEL GOOD. My ability to adapt in any situation musically is something I am most proud of. My goal is to be a chameleon. I don’t want to sound like a Gospel drummer playing Pop music, or a R&B drummer playing Country music. What sets me apart from others is my professionalism, business mindset, and drive to get it done right the first time. Once you call me you won’t want to call anyone else.
What’s next?
My future plans include working with more artists on a national and international level. I want the world to experience the gifts God gave me. Also, I will elevate my real estate company, Sledge Investment Group. We will buy and sell properties, and will have a portfolio of rentals. If anyone reading this has a home or knows someone that has a property they are interested in selling, then please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. My team and I would love to help.
