Meet Elle Cox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elle Cox.

Hi Elle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Good Shepherd Animal Sanctuary was founded in 2018 as a passion project by Elle Cox and Colleen Wilson with a desire to see a rescue that gave all animals a chance no matter their species.

We specialize now in farmed animals at risk of abuse, neglect, and slaughter as well as special needs animals with mobility or trauma-related issues.

We have at current 78 residents who reside full-time at the Sanctuary. From the smallest 4-pound rabbit to the largest 2300-pound steer.

We enjoy bringing awareness to the field of farmed animal rescue, to dissect the ideas of speciesism, and spread vegan values to the world for a more compassionate planet.

By year 2028, The Good Shepherd hopes to expand to a larger property to help more animals in need. We have outgrown our current 6-acre property and seek something around 30-plus acres to continue the mission we set forth to do, to improve the lives of all sentient creatures.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Rescue is never easy. But just when things feel the most bleak or difficult, our team and outside supporters and partners always come through when we need them.

Continuing to cultivate this sense of unity and family around these deserving animals is what truly keeps us going.

In rescue, you encounter a lot of death and dismay, but through struggle grows strength, and I am forever proud of our team and supporters for always keeping the ultimate goal in mind. To save animals and bring awareness to suffering so one day services like ours will not be needed.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Good Shepherd Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) charity in Ohio. It is a Vegan Farmed Animal Sanctuary. Elle Cox is the founder and Executive Director, and we have a team of 22 individuals who volunteer their time to save animals and better the planet.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I didn’t have a lot of close human friends growing up. However, I was always very attached to animals. I can’t pick out any one thing in particular, but I do remember all the many beautiful days spent with my animal companions that made my childhood wonderful in their own ways.
