Inspiring Conversations with Tyson Stiles of SkinnyBoy Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyson Stiles.

Hi Tyson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember; I started learning piano around 7 or 8 years old, picked up the guitar in high school, and the drums in my late 20s, and then built a recording studio during the pandemic. In 2014 a friend asked me if I would be interested in DJing her wedding, seeing as I had a lot of equipment from my years of playing bands. I took the gig, somehow faked my way through it (I must have done something right, no one complained!), and really never looked back.

Fast forward to today and I’m DJing about 40 events a year, playing live music at several of those events as well, as well as offering photo booths, and officiant services. I also dabble in Audio/Visual services for small to medium conferences and other corporate events. I’ve had the opportunity to travel pretty much all over the United States to provide these services and I look forward to expanding even more in the coming years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m sure I’ll be echoing most entrepreneurs when I say this, but no, it most definitely has not always been a smooth road! The obvious struggle was back in 2020 during the height of the pandemic; that was not a good time for the event industry, particularly the wedding industry. I tend to be a “glass half full” kind of guy and I was able to use that as an opportunity to really work on separating myself from the pack and rebranding myself for higher-end weddings and events, but it was a scary time! I was lucky because I had a lot of weddings just rescheduled but I have several friends in the industry that weren’t so lucky.

Another struggle has been knowing my value and what I bring to the table; it took me a long time to learn this and put it into action. It’s easy to get caught up with what others are doing or get up in price wars that are just a race to the bottom. I now know what I am worth, I know what I bring to the table, and I know my customer. There will always be cheaper entertainers, but there is only one me, and when you buy my services, you’re buying me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SkinnyBoy Media?
SkinnyBoy Media is an event/production company that specializes in weddings, live music, and audio/visual services. The main focus is on high-end weddings and providing DJ/Entertainment services for those clients. I’m known for being professional, easy to work with, creative, and the life of the party. What sets me apart is my versatility, my strong musical background, and my personality.

I’m very proud of the events I’ve done where I’ve played guitar for the ceremony, slung it behind my back and officiated for the couple, and then turned around and DJ’d their reception! It’s unique, not many people can do that, and for me…it’s a LOT of fun! I want your readers to know that I’m more than just a wedding DJ – I’m a musician and an entertainer, and my goal at every event is to make sure my clients leave with an elated feeling, knowing their money was well spent and that they were in good hands from start to finish.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think right now we’ve been seeing a huge overflow of weddings that were postponed during covid and I really don’t see it slowing down any time soon. Of course, like with any industry, there are ups and downs, but right now people are excited just to get back out and do things!

I’m planning on seeing a lot more industrial-type looks going forward with venues and decor; I really think the younger Millennials and Gen Z are less interested in the rustic look and will be trending towards a more industrial look overall. I think another big shift will be with clients expecting more bang for their buck; if you’re going to charge more, you’ll need to wow them right out of the gate.
