Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Ansah.
Hi Emma, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a journalist with purpose. As a Canadian correspondent for African Diaspora News Channel, Emancipation Media, The Daily Scrum News and yourNEWS, I Center stories that shape lives, the Black experience, systemic injustice, and the constant fight for equity.
My reporting digs into uncomfortable truths, exposes anti-Black racism at home and abroad, and shines a light on the resilience that refuses to die.
Through every interview and every headline, I create space for voices the world too often overlooks.
Outside the newsroom, I channel that same drive into entrepreneurship, helping small businesses build strength, visibility, and economic power. And through her YouTube platform, Emma Ansah News with Purpose, I keep the dialogue raw and real, breaking down culture, history, identity, and everyday life across the diaspora.
I report. I uplift. I disrupt silence.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been gaining access to larger mainstream media spaces because of the kind of reporting I choose to do. I’m willing to cover the stories that are uncomfortable, particularly issues affecting Black communities and the African diaspora, and sometimes that discomfort creates barriers.
There are media organizations that publicly position themselves as allies to Black communities, yet behind the scenes, there can be a reluctance to amplify the voices, journalists and stories that actually challenge systems and demand accountability. Allyship is easy when it’s comfortable; the real test comes when the story forces difficult conversations.
I’ve learned not to allow closed doors or backlash to determine the value of my work. If certain spaces aren’t prepared for the stories I tell, I’ll continue creating and expanding spaces where those stories can be told unapologetically.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a media professional, journalist, public relations specialist and content creator whose work sits at the intersection of news, storytelling, entertainment and community. I create and deliver news-driven content, while also using my platform and PR expertise to help businesses, entrepreneurs, events, filmmakers and television professionals increase their visibility and connect with wider audiences.
My work in public relations has allowed me to support film and television executives, productions and industry events, from developing promotional strategies to generating media exposure and creating opportunities for meaningful audience engagement. I’m also proud to be part of the press and media community covering the Toronto International Film Festival, which has given me the opportunity to engage with one of the world’s most influential film platforms.
A significant part of my journalism focuses on stories affecting Black communities across Canada and the global African diaspora. I’m particularly passionate about addressing anti-Black racism, amplifying stories that are often overlooked by mainstream media, and at the same time celebrating Black excellence, entrepreneurship, culture and achievement.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to bring all of these worlds together. I’m not limited to one lane. I can report the story, interview the people behind it, create compelling digital content around it, develop the publicity strategy and help get that story in front of the audience that needs to see it.
What sets me apart is that I understand both sides of media: the responsibility of telling the story and the strategy required to make people pay attention to it. I believe powerful stories deserve more than visibility, they deserve impact.
How do you define success?
I define success by impact, not just visibility. For me, success means using my platform to give a voice to people who have been ignored, dismissed or simply not heard, and making sure their stories don’t end with just being told.
Success is when telling that story leads to something tangible: answers, accountability, consequences, justice or meaningful change. Whether that means an institution being held accountable, charges being laid, policies being questioned, or someone finally receiving the recognition and resolution they deserve, I want my journalism to move beyond headlines.
Ultimately, success is knowing that I used my voice and my platform to amplify someone else’s and that because their story was brought into the light, something changed.
