Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Baldauf.
Hi Logan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Im originally from the small town of Weirton, West Virginia. I’d say my interest in art started very young, particularly drawing and as I got older I found painting had an even stronger appeal.
When I started school at CCAD I was originally intending to pursue fine arts but I knew I had to focus on something different.
Since graduating I have been fortunate to have continued my work in indeoendent showings and collaborations.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creatively there are never obstacles, even the toughest of designs have more to learn from and thats how I think I keep myself sane when working.
I’d say the biggest obstacle as I have continued working in the last two years has been direction. As my skills and taste evolve Im always wanting more and more out of my work, this all requires more funding and especially places to show. At the same time I have been fortunate to have a very strong creative family always there to guide me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I try to be broad in the clothes I make, I try focusing on tailoring and evening wear because I find there to be a formula that can create virtually anything you could imagine. The focus on hand sewing and layers building up the anatomy of the body are what I love and try always develop in every collection.
I would like to say my effort to try understanding couture work is what sets me apart. It’s something I can only barely grasp the surface of as a single-person team drafting and sewing everything, but its always on the back of my mind when conceiving a body of work.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
The best thing about Columbus is genuinely the artist resources like GCAC or the Columbus Fashion Alliance, both have been of great support to my work post school. It honestly surprised me to see sewing resources existing in Columbus, it isn’t something I have ever seen before other than the usual garment district in major cities.
The being said I do wish there were more fabric stores in Columbus, they do exist in Ohio just not in the immediate area.
