Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Walter.
Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Many years ago I was gifted with a film camera. From there I started taking photos of my daughter, family and just landscapes. I loved capturing the beauty of everything around me. Fast forward a few years and life happened and I had another baby and my heart just wasn’t in photography anymore, so I put the camera away and was focusing on just life in general. Then I met my now-husband, Steve. A few years later, his daughter was getting ready to graduate high school, and I decided to pick up my camera again and take her senior pictures. And gosh…I had missed it. I had missed being behind the camera. I had missed looking through that little viewfinder and finding the beauty in people. Not just the big, perfectly posed moments, but the little things too. The things that make someone who they are. That senior session really sparked something in me again, and from there, K.Kay Photography slowly started growing. What started out as something I simply loved doing has turned into something I’m incredibly passionate about. I now get to photograph families, seniors, couples, expecting parents, and weddings, and I honestly feel so lucky and blessed that people trust me to capture these important seasons of their lives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been an easy road. Some of the struggles I have had along the way have been when I first picked back up a camera after being away for so long. I had to completely relearn how to operate a camera especially coming from a film camera into the new digital age. The digital camera was around when I had gotten my film camera, but they were not as easily accessible as they are now a days. A few other struggles I am seeing now is how everything is online. From posting your work to trying to gain clients and advertising. And the biggest struggle is learning the backend work for being a photographer as far as the business aspect. I always thought I would just get to take pretty photos but there is so much more that goes into the back end of getting those beautiful photos to people or in front of future clients so they can see your work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Photographer. I specialize in capturing photos for families, seniors, couples, expecting parents, and weddings. I am most proud of a few things. First, my family and the amazing support I have. Second, my editing style. I like to try to stay true-to-color, warm and natural so I can create a timeless look that sets me apart so when someone sees my work, they can easily recognize it is me. Third, that I have had a few photos published in a couple magazines and lastly, voted in 2025 for best photographer and best photographer and best photography studio in 2026 for our local newspaper.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I think the biggest thing I would want readers to know is that photography, for me, has never just been about taking pretty pictures. It’s about people. It’s about freezing a moment in someone’s life that they may not realize is important until years later.
I’m a very sentimental person, and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I cry at weddings, I get emotional watching families grow, and I genuinely love getting to know the people I photograph. I want my clients to feel comfortable being themselves in front of my camera and, more importantly, I want them to walk away feeling good about themselves.
I’m also proud to be building my business here in a small, rural community. You don’t have to be in a big city to create something meaningful, and I hope my journey encourages other people to pursue the things they love, even if they start small or aren’t sure where it will take them. One of my biggest dreams is to continue growing my photography business to a place where I can travel more, explore new locations, meet new people, and capture meaningful stories beyond my own little corner of Ohio. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me, and I hope to keep proving that big dreams can grow from small towns, one photo at a time.
At the end of the day, I just want my work to remind people of how beautiful their lives really are—the big moments, the little moments, and everything in between.
