Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Meyer.
Hi Cheryl, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My entrepreneurial journey began long before Be Kurvy became the brand it is today. I have been doing hair since I was nine years old, so beauty and creativity have always been part of my life. I believe God placed those gifts and that vision inside of me early, even before I fully understood where they would lead.
In 2013, I graduated with a background in managing cosmetology, which strengthened my foundation in the beauty industry. In January 2015, I opened my first business, Cheryl’s Gorgeous Beauty Bar. As the vision God gave me continued to unfold, I transformed the business into Be Kurvy in October 2015, initially focusing on clothing. Over time, Be Kurvy expanded into a broader brand connecting beauty, fashion, wellness, and entrepreneurship.
When Jonah and I first became friends, Be Kurvy was already established. He saw the potential in what I had built and believed the vision could become much bigger. His support went beyond encouragement: he began investing in the business and continues to invest in our growth.
We bring different but complementary strengths to the partnership. I bring my experience in beauty, entrepreneurial drive, and creative vision, while Jonah brings financial literacy, banking knowledge, organization, inventory tracking, spreadsheets, operational support, and his own creative ideas. He is also helping develop the Be A King Collection. Together, we combine creativity with financial awareness and practical planning, while trusting God to guide our steps and keep the purpose behind our work at the center.
In 2019, I established Sista Braiders after my growing clientele made it difficult to complete appointments on time. My sisters stepped in to help, and I wanted them to benefit financially from the work we were doing together rather than simply helping me. That inspired me to turn what had long been a hustle into a structured business with its own identity and room to grow.
Today, Sista Braiders focuses on braiding and convenient mobile services. We have also expanded into one-on-one and group braiding classes and have taught at beauty schools, allowing me to share the gift God gave me, help others develop their skills, and prepare the next generation of braiders. Sista Braiders operates independently while maintaining a strategic partnership with Be Kurvy, so the two businesses can collaborate while preserving their own identities and operations.
Our work continues to evolve through community events such as Mindful Mondays and Be Kurvy Pop-Up Shops, which give entrepreneurs and independent vendors opportunities to connect, share their products, and grow.
Jonah and I also serve the community as Qualified Behavioral Health Specialists (QBHS) and Case Managers. That community-service work has deepened my commitment to open conversations about mental health and to making sure emotional well-being receives the attention and support it deserves.
In August 2026, Be Kurvy appeared in a fashion show at The Survivor Ball, hosted by Ladystarr Proffitt and presented by the Tommie Jakoby Flowers Foundation!
Prior to that event, we were asked to be her guest on I.Hear.You. at WAIF Radio! The experience allowed us to showcase Be Kurvy’s fashion identity while participating in an event centered on survivors. I also used my voice to advocate for mental health by speaking about awareness, personal experiences, and specific mental health concerns. That moment reflected what entrepreneurship means to me: not only building a business, but also using my platform and professional experience to encourage open conversations, support emotional well-being, and make a positive difference.
Jonah and I are still building. Our journey is rooted in faith, creativity, opportunity, education, investment, and a shared commitment to growth. We support each other’s individual goals while continuing to strengthen a vision that reaches beyond products and services into community, confidence, and possibility. Above all, God gets the credit for the gifts, strength, people, and opportunities that have carried us this far. We are committed to honoring Him by walking in our purpose and using what we build to uplift others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the toughest stretches in my journey has been learning how to keep believing in myself and the vision God placed inside of me, even when things didn’t happen as quickly as I hoped. Building a business, balancing family, and showing up for others while working through my own challenges has taught me so much about strength, patience, and perseverance.
There have been moments when I had to remind myself why I started and trust that my journey was still unfolding, even when I couldn’t see the bigger picture. Through it all, my faith, my children, and my desire to walk in my purpose have helped me keep going.
I also have to give credit to my husband, Jonah Meyer, who has been part of my journey, along with some amazing friends and family members who have encouraged me, supported me, and reminded me of who I am when I needed it most. Having people in my corner who believe in me and my vision has made a difference, and I’m truly grateful for them. I made a promise to myself that I would never give up on the vision God gave me. Three years later, I’m still growing, still learning, and still walking in my destiny.
Through Be Kurvy, my passion for beauty, and my commitment to uplifting and encouraging others, I’ve learned that my journey is bigger than me.
My toughest seasons have taught me that setbacks don’t mean you’re defeated. Sometimes, they’re preparing you for what’s next. With God, determination, and the right people in your corner, you can face difficult seasons, grow through them, and still become the person you were called to be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Be Kurvy/Sista Braiders ?
I co-own Be Kurvy and Sista Braiders with Jonah Meyer. Be Kurvy is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and caters to customers nationwide. My foundation in beauty began when I started doing hair at age nine, and I see that ability as a gift from God. I graduated with a background in managing cosmetology in 2013, launched Cheryl’s Gorgeous Beauty Bar in January 2015, and transformed it into Be Kurvy in October 2015 with an initial focus on clothing. Since then, Be Kurvy has grown into a beauty, fashion, wellness, and entrepreneurship brand created to help people feel confident, beautiful, and free to express their individuality.
Our work includes fashion styling, clothing and accessories, beauty services, makeup artistry, skincare, wellness products, and signature offerings such as Be Kurvy Boujee Lipgloss.
Sista Braiders was established in 2019 and operates as an independent braiding business in strategic partnership with Be Kurvy.
We currently serve clients locally, mainly in Cincinnati, Ohio, and some parts of Northern Kentucky. Sista Braiders specializes in braids and protective styles, with most services offered through a mobile model to make professional hair care more convenient. We also offer one-on-one and group braiding classes and have taught at beauty schools. That educational work allows me to share the skills I have developed since childhood and help other people build their abilities and opportunities in the beauty industry.
Jonah and I bring complementary strengths to both businesses. I contribute my beauty experience, entrepreneurial drive, and creative vision. Jonah contributes financial literacy, banking knowledge, ongoing investment, inventory tracking, spreadsheets, operational support, and creative ideas, including his work on the Be A King Collection. We build together by combining creativity with organization, financial awareness, and practical planning. Beyond our businesses, Jonah and I also serve the community as Qualified Behavioral Health Specialists (QBHS) and case managers.
What sets our work apart is that confidence and convenience are only part of the story. Through Mindful Mondays and Be Kurvy Pop-Up Shops, we create welcoming opportunities for entrepreneurs and independent vendors to share their products, meet customers, learn, and build relationships.
Our community-service work as QBHS professionals and case managers is also where my commitment to open conversations about mental health comes from. Be Kurvy’s participation in The Survivor Ball fashion show in August 2026 gave me an opportunity to bring that commitment to the stage, speak about mental health awareness, personal experiences, and specific concerns, and emphasize that emotional well-being deserves attention and support.
I am most pleased that we are building distinct but collaborative brands that help people look and feel their best, share knowledge, support other entrepreneurs, and create room for community growth. We give God the credit for the vision and the ability to keep moving forward, and we want every part of our work to reflect faith, purpose, service, and gratitude.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
One of the biggest risks I have taken was allowing my original business to evolve instead of holding tightly to its first form. I opened Cheryl’s Gorgeous Beauty Bar in January 2015 and, by October of that year, transformed it into Be Kurvy with an initial focus on clothing. Since then, I have continued expanding the vision into beauty, fashion, wellness, entrepreneurship, education, and community events.
I also took a risk in 2019 when I turned years of braiding experience into Sista Braiders, a structured independent business that could create income and opportunity for others.
To me, a worthwhile risk is not a blind leap. It begins with faith, recognizing an opportunity, understanding what each person brings to the table, and being willing to invest the time, creativity, organization, and resources needed to develop it.
Jonah and I approach decisions from different perspectives: I bring beauty experience and entrepreneurial creativity, while he brings financial knowledge, structure, operational support, investment, and creative input. That balance helps us take thoughtful risks while trusting God for direction, continuing to learn, and strengthening the foundation beneath our vision.
Entrepreneurship has taught me that growth often requires embracing change before every detail is certain. My faith reminds me that I do not have to see the entire path in order to take the next step God is calling me to take. I try to take risks that create room for confidence, education, collaboration, and community impact—not only growth for our businesses—and I give God the credit for every door He opens along the way.
