Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Fenton.
Hi Sebastian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well I grew up in the Nashville, Tennessee area. My mother, a visual artist named Robin, exposed me to many forms of art (Ballet, Opera, Museums), and after soaking up as much as I could, I decided to start taking dance classes at 8 years old. As a kid, all I wanted was for people to know that I existed, and that I had no interest in conforming to anyones expectations of me. I liked to dress in rhinestones, feathers, bright colors, and I was always dancing with glee. During my High school years, I took up musical performance at my hometown theatre, then years later, I would receive a BFA in Musical Theatre. Having my artistic side nourished in my adolescence deeply informed the career decisions that brought me to Columbus.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Somewhat I would say. Although me and my older sibling didn’t want for anything growing up, I never quite felt like anyone really caught my vibe, for I was quite an eccentric child. Because of this, I remember being kind of a lonely kid. And although I had my mom and a few dance teachers who were in my corner, it took me a long while to find others who truly saw me and wanted to nurture my creative side. I’m still finding people from all walks of life who share my desires and goals, and I’m grateful everyday for the relationships I maintain even now.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m currently employed as a Metaperformer at ShadowboxLive in the Brewery District. We do a wide variety of shows including Sketch Comedy and Rock Musicals. It is a fantastic environment to hone your skills, as I feel like my dancing, comedic timing, and writing have improved greatly since being hired there this past January. Outside of work, I do anything and everything to keep my artistic juices flowing, such as choreographing, songwriting, photography, and playing my trusty Bass guitar.
I would say what sets me apart is the importance I place on self-expression and inclusivity. I appreciate many different forms of art, from Elizabethan theatre, to Goth culture, to the Drag/Ballroom scene. They not only influence my creation, but how I express myself as an individual. I stand by the thought that when we shut ourselves off from different ways of life, not only does good art die, but hate and bigotry prevail.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I adhere to David Bowie’s sentiment that simply living your life is a form of religion. I try to indulge in as many experiences as I can, good and bad. As humans, leaving our bubble every once and a while can bring forth incredible experiences, and that is what makes great art true in my opinion.
But something I always try to do is treat people with respect and kindness. Being kind is seen as a weakness nowadays, but it takes real strength to wanna make peoples lives better. Loving others, along with practicing self-love, is the best form of defiance in these unprecedented times.
