Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hood.
Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been a lover of music from childhood, and can’t remember a time of my life that I didn’t love to sing. I did musical theater, show choir, church bands—anything I could get my hands on! I started writing as Wreck Like Me in 2019 and haven’t stopped. It’s become my version of journaling—I process my feelings through writing and rewriting. It’s been such a surprise that even though my songs are about such personal moments and experiences in my life, many people have told me about how much they’ve resonated with these songs. Every listener is such a gift to my soul.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It can be tough to be a small artist in a massive pool of musicians, and the massive amount of talent that exists in the world is only becoming more accessible by the day. It’s easy to play the comparison game, or put your worth in how many streams or followers you have. But there’s no point to any of that. The only way out of that mindset is to replace it with something far more useful—we are worth something because of the unique perspectives and experiences that we bring to the table. No matter how many streams I may have, I will always have my voice, my life, my view of the world, and no one can take that from me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a folk singer-songwriter, and I specialize in writing deeply honest yet relatable songs. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made as a writer and singer, and the topics I’ve had a chance to tackle through my writing. I’ve talked about mother/daughter relationships, healing from trauma, fear of the future, feeling far from God, and so much more (especially in my newest songs). Some of my favorite tracks are “Walk Away,” “Mothers,” “Falling Behind,” and “Child.”
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
The process of writing can be lengthier than people assume! I’ll spend months on one idea, fleshing it out, writing second and third drafts. After the song is written, taking it to the studio from the skeleton of an idea to a full fledged, real-deal song can take months or even a year or two if you’re creating a full album. Not to mention album artwork, music videos, social media, and promotional shows!
