Rising Stars: Meet Sophia Zegarelli of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Zegarelli.

Hi Sophia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a kid, I started sewing here and there, but eventually stopped after my sewing machine broke. When COVID happened I found myself with a lot more free time and decided to pick up sewing again. Since then, I haven’t stopped. Getting back into sewing was the best decision I’ve ever made. It ultimately led me to discover my passion for design and build my brand Rocco Atelier.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. There’s a lot of trial and error that comes with sewing and running a business. It constantly challenges you to think outside the box. I think that’s actually what I enjoy most about it. Not every project is the exact same and not every project comes out exactly as planned. But I’ve learned that’s okay because every mistake is an opportunity to learn and grow as a designer and a business owner.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating custom, upcycled handbags, primarily focusing on one of a kind bags and purses. I also take on custom clothing and keepsake orders.

Through my website, customers can join my waitlist when they’re interested in placing a custom order. For upcycled pieces, customers send their items to my P.O. Box, which allows me to accept orders from all over, even though I’m based in Cleveland.

I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to reach people beyond my local area and turn meaningful pieces into something completely new. Being able to create custom orders for people from all over is something I genuinely love doing.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was when I started playing soccer. I’ve always loved playing sports, but I definitely gravitated toward soccer the most. For pretty much my entire time playing soccer, up until I played in high school, my aunt, uncle, and cousin were my coaches. I loved that this was something I could enjoy while spending time with my family.
