Rising Stars: Meet Alicia Spurlock of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Spurlock.

Hi Alicia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

My acting career started as a background extra on Fast 8. I kept showing up, studied at First Team Acting Studio, and I’m now represented by The Talent Group in Cleveland and Heyman Talent Agency in Columbus. I’ve led features including The Melon Heads: House of Crow and Satan’s Peak (summer 2025), and I’ve won Best Supporting Actress three times at the 48 Hour Film Project. I love playing the villain because it’s fun and a little dangerous. I also manage the competition side of the Short Sweet Film Festival in Cleveland, and I model for fun.

Next up, Idol premieres November 1 in Akron. To catch me playing live, check my social media for where I’m performing next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. The biggest struggles, in both acting and music, were imposter syndrome and confidence. I started as a background extra on Fast 8, and it took time to see myself as someone who could carry a film. The same thing happened with my music. Sharing songs that come from personal places, and then standing in front of a room to perform them, takes a lot of self-belief.

What got me through it was staying consistent. I kept taking roles, kept writing, kept posting my acoustic videos, and kept performing, even when I felt unsure. Every film, every show, and every song I finished proved to me that I belonged there. Today I’ve led features, won Best Supporting Actress three times at the 48 Hour Film Project, and released original music on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. I still have moments of doubt, but I no longer let them make the decisions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I don’t think of myself as a daredevil, but I take risks every time I put my work out into the world. For me, the biggest risk has always been believing that my songs are good enough to be heard and my acting is good enough to be seen.

That’s especially true with music. Covers are fun and they’re safe, because people already know and love the song. Publishing your own work is different. It’s personal, it’s vulnerable, and you’re trusting your process without a built-in guarantee that anyone will connect with it. I’ve chosen to share my originals anyway.

What I’ve learned is that putting yourself out there is a skill. The first few times are uncomfortable, but each time you get a little stronger and a little more confident. Now I see risk as the cost of growing. If I only played it safe, I’d never find out what I’m capable of.
