Today we’d like to introduce you to JohnnyCannabis Lutz.
Hi JohnnyCannabis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I launched OhioCannabis.com in 2016, focused on the new legal medical market. I created a lot of content around this industry, but the legal, licensed market never embraced me like I hope they would. So when we were getting close to home grow being a reality in Ohio, I focused on that. I was a grower for almost 20 years, and I knew I could help get many others up and running and growing their own cannabis.
Starting in February 2024, I launched a series of over a dozen Farmers Markets, festivals and competitions, focused exclusively on the home grower.
I took them all over the state of Ohio, bringing together the community, experts and suppliers growers needed to get started and see success.
It was an absolute smash hit, and we had over 10,000+ attendees attend all of our shows.
Sadly, because of Ohio HB56, trading genetics and plant material is now a felony!
So for the time, I have suspended these community farmers markets, in hopes of re-launching them again in the future when laws swing back in our favor.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This was a very challenging road to navigate, as there were no predecessors before me. So I had to figure out how to create these farmers markets, legally for home growers.
Bringing together all of the vendors, suppliers, sponsors, as well as marketing everything was certainly a challenge as well.
But I persevered and created an amazing traveling show to reach as many Ohioans as possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the visionary behind OhioCannabis.com, creating all of the graphics, videos and content over the last decade.
This takes a very creative mind and dedication to pull this all together by myself, wearing many hats along the way.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I waited until we had legal home grow before thinking of launching these farmers markets, however, it was still unknown territory and I was unsure how they would go legally since it was kind of a grey area. Luckily after 12 events, we had zero enforcement issues.
Because of SB56 and everything being black and white now and plant material and seeds/clones becoming a felony, I decided it was safer to fore-go the events to keep attendees, vendors and myself safe from any enforcement at this time.
I am hoping to bring them back again in the future, but Ohio SB56 would need to be reversed, which is still on the table.
