Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my full-time career as a personal trainer unexpectedly. I have an MFA in dance and spent many years performing with contemporary dance companies, continuing into my mid-40s. My interest in personal training grew during my late 20s and 30s, alongside a longstanding curiosity about dance science and kinesiology.
When I was 27, I ruptured my Achilles tendon and was diagnosed with RSD. I gradually found my way back to dancing while earning a living as a personal trainer at a high-end fitness club and as an adjunct professor. At the club, I met many inspiring women who, in 2013, would go on to follow and support my small personal training business.
Laura Regna Fitness Inc. began in the fall of 2013. I spent the first six months working out of a friend’s gym, followed by seven years at a local hotel owned by another client and friend. This January will mark seven years in my own studio, located in the heart of Rochester, New York. I’m proud to be the company’s sole employee.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At my first location, the gym’s owner decided I wasn’t bringing in enough income for her business. I was also going through a divorce at the time.
Later, the hotel gym where I worked suffered a major flood. While my studio was being built, I had to operate out of a shared space with hotel guests for more than a year.
Running the business on my own and covering health insurance and other expenses can make it difficult to get by from month to month. I moved into my new studio at 74 University Avenue in Rochester, New York, and about a month later, I had to close my doors because of COVID.
