Daily Inspiration: Meet Naliyah Hall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Naliyah Hall.

Hi Naliyah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I appreciate this question or questions alike because starting out in graphic design within the music industry in 2023 was interesting. I was asked to design a project for an artist I was a Wardrobe Assistant / Storyboard Artist on. I had little to no experience in graphic design which made the ask more difficult but nonetheless, I manage to design a cover that the artist liked. From then on, I began a career as a graphic designer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road, many career will be that way. With this creative opportunity, you will receive rejection, unsatisfied clients, and unfortunately, in the most severe circumstances, plagiarism. Every project designed won’t always become the most favorable project within your portfolio, with that, I would advise all developing designers to be open to critique or feedback, good or bad.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design artwork, logos, tags, and flyers for music artists and professionals alike. Working in this design field has made me become protective of the designing process and the artwork I connect to the artist. From the initial concept, to the small details, to the color grade and textures. Creating artwork really shapes you into an artist with a specify style. Which brings me to what sets me apart from other designers — It’s the grit and street elements I bring to my artwork. Being from the midwestern region such as Cleveland, I am a frequent listener to music that’s been described as “Trap Music”. With artists residing in Urban areas, I choose to design artwork that directly reflects the artist’s style, intent, and story they’re trying to convey visually. It makes the dynamic between the artist and I more personable.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To always be patient with yourself and where you are in your journey. Absolutely do not compare your artwork to others because every designer has their own style and they’re designing from that.
