Exploring Life & Business with Angela Brown of Coach Angela B | Alight Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Brown.

Hi Angela, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into coaching started long before I officially called myself a coach. I was naturally the person people came to for guidance, encouragement, strategy, and honest feedback. I found purpose in mentoring people through career decisions, business ideas, personal challenges, and moments when they needed someone to help them recognize what was possible.

A major turning point came when my corporate employer ceased operations. I had to decide whether to find another job or take a leap of faith into entrepreneurship. I chose entrepreneurship and entered the health and wellness industry through network marketing. That experience taught me valuable skills in leadership, personal development, sales, communication, and relationship building.

I carried those skills into the beauty industry, where I began helping entrepreneurs strengthen their brands, create additional income streams, and recognize the business opportunities connected to their talents.

My commitment to serving others also led me to establish Beyondxpectation Inc. in 2016. Through the nonprofit, we support families through health, wellness, beauty, education, and access to resources.

One of our signature programs is the Jr. Beauty-Preneur Academy, which helps girls ages 12 to 17 develop confidence and skills in leadership, business, financial literacy, beauty, wellness, and introductory AI.

The program reflects what I have always believed: people need more than information. They need exposure, encouragement, practical tools, and someone who believes in their potential.

As my work grew, I saw how many entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofits were overwhelmed by marketing, communication, administrative work, and trying to keep up with technology. That led me to become a certified AI consultant through an accredited program.

Today, I help everyday business owners and mission-driven organizations use AI to save time, improve communication, strengthen marketing and fundraising, and create smarter systems while keeping people and human judgment at the center.

I describe myself as a certified AI consultant, business coach, educator, and community builder. These roles may appear different, but they are connected by one mission: helping people turn their skills, ideas, and lived experiences into income, impact, and opportunity.

My journey has included setbacks, reinvention, and more than one fresh start. Every chapter has strengthened my ability to guide others. I have learned that purpose always outweighs circumstance, and I am committed to using everything I have learned to help others build what is possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape the woman and leader I am today.

Earlier in my life, I made choices that resulted in a felony conviction. That experience could have defined my future, but I refused to allow my past to become the final chapter of my story.

I rebuilt my life, continued growing professionally, became an educator, and was ultimately granted a pardon by the Governor of Ohio. That journey taught me the power of accountability, resilience, faith, and second chances. It also gave me a deeper understanding of what it feels like to be judged by where you have been instead of recognized for who you are becoming.

Entrepreneurship brought another set of challenges. When my corporate employer ceased operations, I stepped into business without the security of a steady paycheck.

Later, when I entered the beauty industry, I was not trained to perform services such as hair, nails, makeup, or lashes. Instead of allowing that to stop me, I found a different way to enter the industry.

I built a six-figure e-commerce business offering hair-extension products. That experience showed me that beauty professionals did not have to depend only on the hours they could physically work behind the chair.

I began coaching hair-service providers on how to expand beyond services, build personal brands, sell products online, and create income that was not limited by their appointment schedules.

I faced rejection and skepticism because I was approaching the beauty industry from a different direction. However, I knew my strength was in business strategy, recognizing opportunities, developing people, and helping others turn their talents into multiple streams of income.

I also learned how to build with limited resources. As a business owner and nonprofit founder, I have had to meet growing needs while working with limited staff, funding, and time. There were seasons when the vision was much larger than the resources available.

I had to become creative, disciplined, and willing to keep moving even when everything was not perfectly in place.

Those experiences are why I coach and consult the way I do. I do not lead from theory alone. I understand rebuilding, financial pressure, rejection, starting with what you have, and having to prove yourself more than once.

My setbacks did not disqualify me. They prepared me to help other people recognize their value, rebuild with confidence, and create new opportunities from where they are today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Coach Angela B | Alight Consulting?
Coach Angela B is my personal brand and the umbrella for my work as a certified AI consultant, business coach, educator, and community builder. I earned my AI consultant certification through an accredited program.

Through Alight Consulting, I help entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofits use AI, digital strategy, and smarter business systems to save time, improve visibility, strengthen communication, and create measurable results.

I specialize in making AI practical for everyday business owners. Many people are curious about AI but feel overwhelmed by the technology or unsure how it applies to their work. I help them move beyond randomly using tools and develop a clear strategy for marketing, content creation, customer communication, operations, fundraising, and business growth.

My work is guided by my A.L.I.G.H.T. Framework: Assess, Listen, Implement, Guide, Human Review, and Track Results. This approach allows me to understand what a business or organization actually needs before recommending a solution. I believe AI should support people, not replace their experience, creativity, relationships, or judgment.

Business coaching is also a major part of my brand. Before becoming a certified AI consultant, I built a six-figure e-commerce business offering hair-extension products. I used that experience to coach hair-service providers on moving beyond the daily hustle behind the chair by building personal brands, offering products online, and creating additional streams of income.

My community-impact work is carried out through Beyondxpectation Inc., the nonprofit I founded in 2016. One of our signature initiatives is the Jr. Beauty-Preneur Academy, which helps girls ages 12 to 17 build confidence and develop skills in beauty, workforce readiness, business, leadership, financial literacy, mental health, etiquette, wellness, and introductory AI.

What sets my brand apart is that I combine lived experience with business strategy, technology, education, and community service. I understand how to rebuild, start with limited resources, recognize an opportunity, and turn knowledge into income and impact.

I do not simply teach tools. I help people see what is possible and create a practical path to reach it.

I am most proud that my work creates a ripple effect. When I help an entrepreneur build a stronger business, a nonprofit expand its capacity, or a young girl recognize her leadership potential, that impact reaches families and communities.

That is the purpose behind everything I build.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice is to focus on building genuine relationships instead of approaching every connection as a transaction. Networking works best when you are interested in people, willing to listen, and prepared to offer value before asking for something.

It is also important to understand the difference between a mentor and a coach.

A mentor typically shares wisdom, perspective, and lessons from their own personal or professional experience. A coach helps you clarify your goals, create a strategy, stay accountable, and take action. Both can be valuable, but they serve different purposes.

Before reaching out, be clear about what you are working toward and what kind of support you need. A mentor or coach cannot fully support a vision you have not taken the time to explain.

Look for mentors and coaches who have experience in the specific areas where you want to grow. One person does not have to meet every professional or personal need.

What has worked well for me is showing up consistently, asking thoughtful questions, following up, and staying connected beyond the first conversation. I attend business and community events, participate in professional spaces, and remain open to learning from people in different industries.

Some of my strongest relationships have developed because we recognized opportunities to support each other’s work.

Mentorship and coaching must also include action. Do not continue asking for guidance if you are unwilling to apply what you have already received. Respect the person’s time, complete the work, and return with results or better questions. That shows that you value the relationship.

As someone who naturally mentors and coaches others, I know these relationships are not only about receiving. I look for opportunities to share resources, make introductions, offer encouragement, and help someone recognize an opportunity they may have missed.

The best networks are built when people grow together.

Most importantly, do not wait until you feel completely ready to enter new rooms. Introduce yourself, speak about your work with confidence, and allow people to learn who you are.

Opportunities often come through relationships, but those relationships begin when you are willing to show up.
