Life & Work with Heather McCormick of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather McCormick.

Hi Heather, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my art career under great adversity. My art was born during a complex ptsd diagnosis. I began using art as a catharsis and as a way to be kind to my mind. I painted with my hands often and began making mixed media pieces and furniture creations.

I pushed through and I never gave up. Fast forward to now and I am an art teacher, and adapted arts specialist, an illustrator, an author, and a muralist. I volunteer my time often to make children (and grownups too) smile and feel self love Amazing amazing things now come to me through my positive attitude and my perseverance. I am so very grateful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Obstacles along the way to where I am now were the complex ptsd, the debt from my lost company, and losing my nonprofit community manager roles. I kept at the art, booked some exhibitions, and pushed through to now teach at the prestigious Beck Center for the Arts, Arthouse Cleveland, and with Cleveland City and Lakewood City Schools.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create mixed-media art for my inner child. I am Kind to my Mind by “arting” all over the place. I teach others to get into the flow of art and channel their inner child. We get messy and we dance and play while creating art. We find confidence and self love. I teach all ages and I create storybooks that speak to everyone’s inner child. I’m so very grateful to have found alignment in my life. I’m incredibly proud of myself for my resilience and perseverance, something I get from my mother. I’m also very proud of myself for my optimistic and peaceful outlook on life. I teach kindness and kindness to one’s self…that is a pretty magical thing indeed.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think something people may not realize about me is that none of my career accomplishments are my greatest achievement at all. The art, the storybooks, the business. None of these are my greatest achievement. My greatest achievement is the daughter I raised. I raised a human who is just and fair. She is a young woman who is genuine, kind, and empathetic, My daughter is a woman who says what she thinks and is open to communication and growth. She is a Northeast Ohio textile artist with Lady Honey’s and she is my greatest achievement. I am the proudest mom.
