Check Out Cecilija Rowane’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilija Rowane.

Hi Cecilija, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the Cleveland area as the youngest of five girls, so I was always surrounded by family, really shaping my high value for connecting with others. My mom’s parents are from Slovenia, so my Slovenian heritage was also a big part of my upbringing. I grew up attending and participating in Slovenian events throughout the Cleveland community, which gave me a strong appreciation for my culture and the community.
Healthcare has also always been a big part of my life because both my parents work in healthcare. Growing up around that built my interest in the way it allows you to connect with people, ultimately leading me towards nursing.
Today, I’m a nursing student at The Ohio State University, going into my third year. I also spend my this past summer at an internship in Slovenia, with the foundation ASEF. This program connects individuals with Slovenian heritage to mentors in the country, allowing fellows to spend 10 weeks shadowing and doing research in their specialty.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I’m a little surprised by how smooth of a road it has been. Of course there have been ups and downs and moments of high stress. However, as I’ve continued through my courses and gained more hands-on-experience, I’ve realized more and more how much i truly love what I’m pursuing. I feel very fortunate to have discovered a career I have such a strong passion for.
I have really appreciated the different experiences I have had the privilege to have. Ohio State has a great program, with an engaging education curriculum. Each course and clinical has new knowledge to offer. Additionally, I was able to spend a summer in Slovenia with ASEF. The American Slovenian Education Foundation connected me with L:jubljana Medical Center, where I was able to see a different countries medical system and how they issue different situations. I think each experience I have had, has allowed me to develop as a person and will later on allow me to be better for my future career.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently a student, but plan on pursuing a career in nursing once I get my BSN.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always been a very social and extroverted person. Everywhere I went growing up, I somehow managed to leave with a new friend. If anything, I’ve sometimes been told I’m almost too social because I genuinely can’t help but talk to everyone around me. Growing up surrounded by so many siblings, I think I naturally became really interested in people and their different personalities and experiences.
Additionally, I have always loved to travel. I grew up often traveling and continue to hold its value close to me. I take any opportunity I can to meet new people and learn of their unique backgrounds. A strong belief that I hold, which is often overlooked in today’s competitive and fast-paced environment, it that true academic and professional success requires making time for self-care and exploration. I believe these experiences provide a foundation for personal growth and broaden our understanding of the world.
